External Capture Devices

Hey,

I'm very inexperienced in the video capture arena so I'm looking for some helpful suggestions. I'm looking for an external usb video capture device that takes ntsc input, and preferebly compresses it to mpeg format. Can anyone suggest some good ones?

TIA,

P.

You need more than USB to get good performance from a capture card, USB is only 1.5MB/s! You would need at least USB 2.0 to get really good performance. I'm fairly sure the model you want for USB 2.0 is the Pinnacle Systems PCTV deluxe, it also has hardware compression.

here is a link for the PC TV deluxe. It is USB 2.0 and has many other features. http://www.pinnaclesys.com/Category.asp?Category_ID=5&langue_id=7

That's true Crashman, but I wanted hardware compression to take the load of the processor. I would also need a pretty big hard drive, especially for mpeg-2, and since this would be for a laptop, I dont know if it would work too well. I think I'm canning this idea...thanks for the replies anyway.

Yes, I said it has hardware compression. I don't own one, but Pinacle says it has hardware compression, and I consider them a reliable company.

Check out the link. It will answer most of your questions.
You dont need a large hard drive if you arent storing all your files on it. Capture a video then burn it to CD or DVD.
If anything with video out, copy onto video tape.
