IOW, what are you using to keep track of what you doing as fact as
effects, normalizing, converting etc.
IOW at the end of a project, how do you document what was done in terms of
mixdown?
Any free/low cost software that will do track sheets, etc

I use the word processor or Excel to create the sheet and type in the info. It keeps everything very
neat.
Creating a tracking sheet is very easy. You can use Word or Excel or similar programs. And you can
document everything you do if you are so inclined, then print it up for the client.
I take lots of notes, Track sheets only stop you from recording over
something, and tell the next engineer down the line what's on the
track. (not another train I hope)
Before I start rendering any of the audio files I do a "save as" and
store my plugin settings etc, I back up regularly and try and leave
access to all stages of the production.
I don't see a DAW as being like a Desk and Tape machine setup, recall
sheets don't really count in this situation. if you want to change a
setting to how it was before you changed it you just re-import the
original file.
Backing everything up properly, and labeling clearly is the way
forward.
Bring back those plactic 2" tape boxes though, and put yer dvd's dss4's
in them I say...

I use paper track sheets and put them in the box with the tapes.
There are a bunch of .pdf files available, including a version of
the old 3M one which is at http://www.panix.com/~kludge/kludge-form.pdf.
With a DAW, can't you use the automation system to log everything?
