Yo all... here's my situation. I'm in need of a car, because my dad wants that Acura Legend I've been driving. As of right now, I don't know if I'm going for used or new... it really depends on how much money I'm allowed to spend. Here are some potential choices.

New: Honda Civic EX ($16k)
Honda Civic Si ($20k)
Acura RSX Type-S ($23k)
Mazda RX-8 6spd. ($26k)

Used: Acura Integra GS-R
BMW Z3
Mazda Miata
Honda Prelude
Honda Del Sol

Okay let me just say that I'm not some spoiled rich kid whose parents are buying him a car because he wants one. I'm going to be working my friggin tail off for this, with only some help from my parents. Anyway, I know that the RX-8 is pretty far up there, probably way too much to be practical. I test drove one, it was freaking fun though. What do you guys think?

New: Honda Civic EX ($16k): Gay
Honda Civic Si ($20k): Sorta gay
Acura RSX Type-S ($23k): Sweet
Mazda RX-8 6spd. ($26k): Super sweet

Used: Acura Integra GS-R: Alright
BMW Z3: Gay
Mazda Miata: Gay
Honda Prelude: Gay
Honda Del Sol: Gay

If new, look at the Scion tC. It's a nice car. Toyota Matrix XRS is cool too, as is the Corolla XRS. I think if I were to buy a new car it would be the tC.

A used previous generation turbo Toyota MR2 would rock too. Cheap and fast as hell, and looks good too.

Subaru WRXs are good too. You can get a used one for about $15k I think.

Rotary engines are crap, so I'd be weary of the RX-8. It is a wicked looking car that performs great though.

It seems like you know to stay away from American cars, so good for you. (Let the rippings for that statement begin).

the scion is decent but doesn't excite me much. it is cheap though. My choir director has a matrix.

Thanks for the suggestions about the MR2, that's a good idea. I do stay away from American cars, I don't like them. Corvettes and Vipers are cool, but I can't get either of them. A WRX would be a total bitch to insure, don't ya think? even though I have a perfect driving record. Such a badarse car, though. A neighbor (an old guy!) has a WRX STi. It is SOOOO BALLLSY!!!! But then another neighbor has a freaking BMW Z8. I am so jealous.

AHHH MOTHERLAND!!!!!

Reply to daddywags214

Go to the bookstore and read up on these cars. The matrix is pretty solid. I'd stay away from the BMW's since you're too young for them. People will get the wrong impression and think you have your dad's car. The Scion is just a toyota. I think the WRX's are ugly. Stay away from your generation's box cars. Those are stupid.

The Del Sol is fun to drive but is pretty weak. I don't know if they have a turbo version or not but I'd probably avoid it. The Miata is really gay. The MR2 sucks unless you get a turbo and even then I wouldn't get one.

You're 17. Get something used that's a decent place to start (i.e. not a BMW). You'll probably just wreck it, anyway.

I don't want speed necessarily... just a pure driving experience. That's why I'm considering a Miata. It's very basic, and has awesome handling. Speed is nice tho.

I don't know about the matrix... for the most part I'm partial to coupes. But I will avoid BMW probably... they'd be crazy to insure anyway.

There is a version of the Del Sol, the Del Sol VTEC which has the same engine as the 1999-2000 Honda Civic Si, with 160hp. The redline on that car is 8400!

Just promise me, or us as well, you will not rice the hell out of your car. Also promise it won't have an engine that screams "I'M GONNA FREAKIN' BLOW!".

My experience driving performant cars is very minimal. The highest I've gone is a Camry V6 220HP. My God was that fun. I know yall prolly have experience with much faster cars, with them V8 300HP and over, but for me that 220HP car was a blast on the highway. I never thought V6 made such a difference. I'm convinced our next car should at least have that much power under it, otherwise it's not gonna be fun. I like our Sonata 2002, but it's weak. Acceleration-wise and overall smoothness.

Have you considered a Tiburon? It's not very expensive and seems like a nice basic performance sports car.
Celicas might not be so bad either. I guess for such cars though, you might get more bang for your buck if you looked at earlier versions.

I like it, in fact if things go my way i will own a Viper when i graduate from college.
But i doubt a 17yr old needs that much Pussy.
Also the 80+ price tag might be a little much.

And by the way, you are a spoiled kid. Who cares about the rich aspect? You should drive a POS for a while and wait till you can afford your own car. I've grown up all around brats with money. Its not that i envious of what they have, but its that they dont know how special it is to have a car. They see it as a right for them to drive a car....

ANY 17yr old with a car that is 15K+ and thinks he isn't spoiled is rediculous. And this is comming from a kid who grew up in Bellevue Washington....and most of my friends live in Medina. (if you dont know already...a guy you all know lives there, named William Gates)

yeah, i read that.
But to him "working his friggin' tail off" could mean working 15 hours a week or 70. Who knows?

I guess it all comes down to what % he is going to pay and does he pay his own insurance or any % of it.

One point of clearification, being spoiled isn't bad...if someone was giving out cars when we were all 17 we would have taken them. but being spoiled and not knowing it is what is bad.

I dont know if this guy knows he is spoiled and maybe he's not even spoiled at all. He could be paying for 95% of it and pays his own insurance....

I'm paying for 100% of the car payments, and paying whatever the difference is in my insurance, because it will obviously go up when I get a nice car. I work like crazy to be able to do it, too. I'm a personal assistant for a rich old lady who lives here in K-town. I'm on call 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. Believe me, I mean it when I say I'm working my freaking tail off, because I am. It's worth it to me, cars are my major passion.

My bad then....
thats a huge commitment to one little old lady but thats cool. The way you phrased it, you seemed more like you would pay like 50bucks a month for it.

That's a crazy amount of money to pay for a car when you're 17. If you work a lot you wont have time to drive, so you better enjoy it.

My sister's boyfriend is going to sell his 2001 vette soft top and i am trying to see if i can get a family discount on that. Around 15K would be hella nice, but i think he wants like 22K or something....
I feel your pain. Knowing that i would have to work 40+hours a week plus school just to afford it. And thats a pain....but for a vette.....maybe worth it, who knows?
