I had a few games I ran at 1600 X 1200 under Win 98 (with Nvidia Geforce 3). Since updgrading Operating system to XP Home edition, I can't run correctly in 1600 X 1200. The games will run at this resolution, but the displayed image does not fill the monitor completley, and that image is bowed / distorted.

I have of course- changed to Detonator drivers designated for XP. The version I am currently using are the 21.83's.

Any thoughts?

I would suggest that you upgrade to the official 28.32 driver set in case your refresh rate has dropped to 60Hz while running D3D games, and afterwards, while within a game, adjust the display with your monitor controls, which should create a preset for that resolution when the game is launched, but not affect your normal display resolution and adjustments.

You should also run DXDIAG, (Start\Run, type - DXDIAG, and press Enter), and under the More Help\Override section, type in a custom refresh rate for the gaming resolution you prefer. I suggest 85, 90, or 100Hz, if your monitor can support any of those refresh rates at 1600x1200. You should check the monitor specifications in advance before altering this from the default.

The new driver will load a nVidia Driver Helper Service, which is, for all intents and purposes, effectively useless, and can hamper shutting down the system. I suggest disabling it entirely. (Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services). Right-click on a Service to change it's function, under Properties.

I highly suggest that you do not install the driver by double-clicking and allowing it to extract automatically. It is a much better idea to create a new folder for the driver set, right-click and drag the installation file to the new folder, and extract the files. Then, when upgrading the driver, do this from the Device Manager. (Start\Settings\Control Panel\System\Hardware\Device Manager). Open up the Display Adapter, and select your video card. Right-click on the video card and select Upgrade driver. Select the driver manually, by browsing to the folder you created with the extracted installation files.

This method of upgrading a driver generally causes less conflicts, and avoids any possible corruption with the installation launcher in the self-extracting .exe ZIP of the driver set.

It definately sounds like your monitor is running at a refresh rate other than which it should. If you're running a direct3d game use dxdiag to force a refresh rate that you know to be supported... the higher the better but anything over 75/80 and you wont notice much difference..saying that though mines running at 100..just because i can :)
