Can non-serial ATA drives be used in a raid configuration with the ICH5 raid controller, or would an additional controller be needed? The board I am wondering about is the MSI 865pe neo2 with Western Digital special edition ATA drives.

Most can be used with a Serial to Parallel adapter...but not all, and some adapters won't work with some boards. Unless you can get one from MSI or find a company that garuntees compatability, I'd go with a card.

In fact, each adapter would cost you as much as one inexpensive card.
