From what I've seen, yes. I remember more of it from when I lived out west. Which places around here did you live where it was so bad?

If I had a dollar for every time I met someone from the northeast or midwest or something who came down here and said "Hey, racism isn't as bad down here as I always heard; it's actually worse back home" or "Hey you guys actually drive cars? I don't know about the entire south. Yes I've heard about the stereotypes, but I can say that Virginia is at least way more racist than we are out west.

Well, first of all I didn't say all southerners are racist. I said there are a lot of racists down south, which I'm sure is true.

I don't meet many true racists here in California, although I think my stepdads family probably is. Apparantly California is just full of stupid liberals, and being racist isn't a liberal thing to be.

Oh yeah, I know ya didn't say <i>all</i>. But from what I've seen from the states I've lived in, the stereotype is blown way out of proportion. Some people here think "a lot" of the people in Cali are long-haired, hippie drug-addict surfer bums, and that a lot of the people in the northeast are arrogant super-snob sissy focks, but that's not the way it really is, either.

Sure, there are a few racist folks here, but there are everywhere else, too. Hell, IIRC, I heard the N-word for the first time in California. Honestly, a high percentage of the racist comments I hear, as rarely as I hear them, are from much older folks who grew up when things were different and are they're just too much a bunch of tired old dogs to learn any new tricks.

You seem to just hear more about racial crimes coming from the South. Racism in California doesn't seem to ever get to the point of people dragging someone by a chain by their truck for being black. Now, I know that was an isolated incident.

I apologize if anyone was offended. I've never been to the South, but know the history of what happened in the South only 40 years ago. I do hope things have radically changed since back then, but am not so sure those feelings have been completely eliminated.

I mean, the KKK is headquartered in Arkansas.

I never meant to infer that all, or even most, Southerners are racist. I simply meant that it is still there, and it appears to me moreso than much of the country.

I'd be glad if I were wrong though.

yeah but there are racist people all over the country, and truthfully i cannot verify if there is more or less in the south. i know it exists but i am also aware of it being in alot of other states as well. ya know? hell, i have never been to california so i know i probably have some stereotypes about people from cali as well.
