I’m still shopping for a laptop, patience seem to be providing new options, I’m looking for a laptop to, run MS Office, surf the web, and possibly run WOW on.

How much of a difference does hard drive speed (RPM) make to laptop performance? I was considering buying the following HP notebook:

Operating System Genuine Windows XP Professional
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.0 GHz)
Display 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
Graphics Card 512MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
Memory 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB)
Hard Drive 100 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
Networking Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
Primary Battery High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Productivity Software Microsoft(R) Office 2003 Basic

At a cost of $2030.99

Then Toshiba introduced their Satellite P105-S9722 with the following specs:

Processor Type * : Core™2 Duo
Processor Number * : T7200
Processor Speed * : 2.0GHz
Operating System * : Genuine Windows® XP Professional
Memory Size * : 2048MB
Display Size * : 17.0"
Display Type * : Widescreen XGA+ with TruBrite™ Technology
Display Resolution * : 1440x900
Graphics Chipset * : GeForce® Go 7900 GS
Graphics Memory * : 256MB GDDR3
Hard Drive Size * : 200GB @4200 rpm
Li-Ion (9-cell, 6000mAh)

At a cost of $1999.00

The Toshiba is the clear winner except for the hard drive speed and the software they include that I don’t want; I wish I could just order the parts I want and build it myself, or how about a machine with just an OS and drivers. So how much of a performance hit do you take with a 4200rpm drive vs. a 7200 rpm drive?
I’m still researching my options, and by no means committed to either of these machines, so feel free to suggest other options.
Anyone have experience with Toshiba notebooks, are they high quality, or cheap?

I think you should check out some other forums, NotebookReview andNotebook Forums for starters. You should be able to find real world reviews of both those laptops, plus experiences with customer service etc. IMO If you want to build from parts, one of the best ways is to buy a configurable laptop so everything is under ONE warranty. You can probably save a few bucks parting it out and buying barebones, but all your warrant periods will vary, and it's not as common to find a barebones with warranty, vs fully configured. There is a big dif between 4200 and 7200 if you're playing any games that NEED the speed, or programs that require large chunks of data. like recording video/sound and such. I'm not sure WOW needs it, but you will appreciate added "snappyness" staying at no less than a 5400 rpm drive. WOW from what I've read is not particularly GPU intensive and can even run fine on a GMA950. Perhaps that's with less "eye candy". If you were willing to consider building I'd look into a Sager 5750 or 5760 with a x1600 and 7900gtx respectively. They're sold by many resellers and unquestionabely well built. But if WOW is all you need, you could probably do fine for less
