Can anyone recommend a good way to place monitors on an existing desk?
I'm working on some audio-for-video and don't need absolute reference
quality (I use my studio for final mixing) but want something better
than computer speakers.

If I get a pair of small nearfileds or even a sat/sub system like the
Blue Sky, what's the best way to place them on my existing desk at the
proper listening position? I don't want to purchase new furniture. The
desk I currently have is only one level and doesn't have a second tier.
There's not enough room behind the desk for floor stands.

Does anyone make a short desktop speaker stand? I think I would need
about 8" of height. Alternatively, does anyone make a floor stand where
the back of the base is nearly flush with the vertical part of the
stand? That might work also.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.
- Dave

You could create your own monitor shelf (to put the nearfield
speakers on either side of the computer screen) with a pre-finished
shelf and 1 or 2 bricks on either side to space it above the desk.

What you need is a "bridge" on which to put your monitors. Three
pieces of wood and some glue and screws will do, or you may be able
to find something ready-made (you'll probably have to assemble it from
flat pre-cut pieces) in the cheap shelf, cubby hole, and furniture
department in your local Home Depot. Not having room behind the desk
(not sure if you mean desk like what you put stuff on or "desk" in the
British sense - the mixing console) means that your speakers might be
too close to a wall if you put them behind the desk. And if you put
them over the desk on a bridge, they might be too close to your normal
working position. Whatever you do will be less than optimum, but if
you just want to hear better speakers, you take what you can get.

I've seen stands like this, maybe from Anchor. But they're pretty
expensive. You're not going to get a great position no matter what you
do, so you might as well try the cheap approach first.

some of the finer audio details can be lost if the monitor stand
vibrates.
if you build a bridge stand, make it solid.
there are some stands that mount to the wall.
that may be the best solution.

That's not gonna get the speaker out from the wall much is it? I've read you
want a decent space behind monitors or else you get accentuated bass
frequencies.

yes, some speakers want to be away from walls
I got the impression this is a satelite/subwoofer system.
and even with a monitir bridge the speakers would still
be against the wall. and probably vibrate like hell.
my thought was to provide a solid support for the satelites,
and keep the desktop clean.
plus there is the comb filter effect of playing audio across the
desktop.
but the OP said this is a setup for video
final audio would be done in a better environment.
