Steam hangs on Install

I have been having problems trying to install Steam on my computer. Everything is up to date on the system. When I click on link through steam to install it starts the process however it gets to a window where it says updating steam and it hangs. I have no idea what else to do. Tried different browsers still same problem. I have Windows 7 pro 64

More about steam hangs install
  1. Have you tried letting it do its thing for 10 minutes or so? This step often throws a "process not responding" warning, but it typically does work and will complete (despite the warning).
  2. Check the Steam forums for help.
  3. Delete the c: / programfiles/steam directory and run the install again.
  4. Uninstall steam if it shows in the add/remove programs, otherwise just delete c:\program files\steam.

It does not show on computer as installed so I can't uninstall it. Thats my problem though that it will not install.
  6. Did it get as far as creating a c:\program files\steam folder? if it did, delete the folder and try starting again.
