Hi-
I recently found a Tascam 234 at a garage sale cheap, and it seems to
have worn/disintegrated belts. so I can't even test the heads, etc.
is it worth fixing? I'm planning to do some home recording, but am
thinking about going into my computer.
I've got an odd assortment of other gear, a pair of AKG C1000's, a
Bluemax 2 chan preamp, and with the 234 I got a Tascam MM-20 mixer that
I also haven't tested.

I would like to have a tape machine though....

any thoughts suggestions would be appreciated. I'm in Brooklyn.
thanks

I have a nice TEAC cassette deck that had disintegrated belts. I
decided after taking one look at how much trouble it was to get to
them that I'd take it to a shop around here that has a good reputation
for repairs of consumer audio equipment (they have a good collection
of outrageously priced used gear - that's a good sign) and I just paid
them $69 (minimum charge) for them to tell me that not only the belts
were bad, but the capstain motor was frozen, and that it would cost
$190 to fix it.

Consumer gear isn't worth fixing. Sell it at your next garage sale or
on eBay. I know the TASCAM 234 isn't technically consumer gear, but
it's built like it, and it'll cost like it to get it repaired. It's not worth it. Try
the M20 mixer that you got in this stash. Even if it does work, a new
small Behringer mixer will proabably be better overall. Get a decent
sound card and you'll be recording.
