My Mother is getting a new laptop for her birthday and I was wondering what would be the easiest and cheapest method to transfer about 2 to 4 GB of information from her old desktop to the laptop. I don't own any large storage devices and I don't have a DVD burner, I do have a CD burner. So I was hoping someone could offer a good suggestion, thanks in advance!!!

If you have a LAN, and you can get your mother's desktop & laptop to your place, you could hook up both machines to your router & easily transfer files that way.

you don't even need a lan. just connect the computers using a network rj-45 cable or a firewire cable .

or you could get an external Hard Disk

I agree if you dont have a LAN you can just spend a few bucks for an rj-45 CROSSOVER cable. Not the regular vanilla one that is usually sold. Difference is in the wiring since you're not using any switches/hubs. Cheaper then a firewire cable too I believe and since most old desktops and even newer ones might not have them.
