hey, i was wondering whats up w/SONY monitors nowadays? do they still hold up to the competition? i ve been getting mixed reports lately, some folks are saying SONY monitors are not quite as good as they used to be quality/realiability wise? i was particularly interested in the 410R model myself (the 19" one), how does it compare to top of the line 19" units from viewsonic/hitachi/samsung etc?? how's SONY support by the way? i ve been getting mixed reports in this area especially
Let me start off by saying I'm a cheapskate. I also love quality. I buy my monitors refurbished.
I've tried serveral "flat tube" monitors and never been quite impressed. I've found the old Hitachi semi-flat tube with .22mm dot pitch to offer EXTREMELY high image quality. It's been on the market for many years and is still used today in many budget monitors, such as my current Viewsonic A90.
Now, I'm a system refurbisher, and have seen a LOT of monitors. The best FLAT tube images I've seen were using Samsung tubes. I was so impressed by my last batch of Samsung 17" monitors that, had they been 19", I would have traded in my A90!
One of the things that impressed me with these Samsungs is that, although officially supporting only 1600x1200 according to what I read, I could use them at up to 1920x1440 resoltion and still read small fonts! That is, if I got close enough to the monitor, like 4 inches away! 17" is too small to make good use of such high resolutions, but the fact that they worked, and worked well, was amazing!
So there's my recomendations. If you won't be using anything higher than 1600x1200, the old .22mm Hitachi tubes are great. If you need higher resolutions or prefer a completely flat tube, Samsungs would be great as well.

if u got money, Sony still wastes all companies in the ULTRA-TOP-OF-THE-LINE CRTS, but their mid range is not so pretty.

I'd get a nVidia GeForce FX 5900Ultra... if THEY WOULD CHANGE THAT #()#@ HSF
My bro does a lot of CAD/CAM work. A few years back his work purchased a then top-of-the-line 21" FD Trinitron for him to use at home. He had to send two of them back to CDW because they were very blurry around the edges. The third one was better, but the problem was never totally eliminated. If you look close enough you can still see that text around the edges is a little blurry. Not quite what I would expect from a professional monitor. Personally I have a 17" G200. It is getting pretty old, but the antiglare coating built into the CRT is starting to peel, which is quite annoying. Of course these are just my personal experiences with Sony. I haven't really researched the monitor market lately so I don't have a recommendation on which brand is best ATM.

Well, i can't say anything about sony, so this may be totally irrelevant, but I just bought a Hitachi 19", CM721F , the black one. It's a totally flat screen, but yes, the text does get blurry around the left bottom edges, where your start menu would be. It's a good monitor, just that little problem, oh well, I guess everything can't be perfect.
They have an absolutly clear picture...i have had 1 of the 700nf's for 2 years and the other for 1.5 years....and i only have good things to say about samsung.
3 386DX-25's...12 volts...glue some ln2 and a wicked amount of overclocking and you get a willamantee minus 36 pins, 33.75 million transistors and a couple hundred mhz...
