Did he say "mastering"? I like the K 240 AKG's myself for music recording.
Nothing hyped at all and comfortable. For more isolation, get a pair of ear
protectors(same ones the airlines use), and put a pair of Sennheisers in
them, a bit of screwin around but well worth the effort. No more bleeding
click tracks through the overheads!

I really like the AKG 401 and 501 - if you like open headphones, they will
give you a really accurate representation of the sound you're working on,
especially the 501.
The 401 has a softer top end which I prefer to listen to CDs - for listening
pleasure.
They're probably a bit too soft for critical listening, but the 501 have the
top end extension that you expect for mastering, mixing etc.
I own a K401.
I use K240M for typical studio use.
I really like them, I've tried many HPs...
As far as closed cans go, I like the new K271s. Very nice - sort of a closed
K240M.

You're a more cunning linguist than I. I stand corrected.

My two favorites are the Sony MDR 7506 and the Sennheiser
HD-580. Very different devices with very different potential
applications.
