I'm getting a pair of Sennheiser hd580 headphones which have been rated as one of the best sets of headphones around. my computer's sound card (when it comes in) will be a sound blaster audigy gamer, and i will have no speakers, just the headphones. will the headphones work by plugging them into the soundcard directly and will this be a complete waste (should i upgrade sound card to audigy 2 6.1)?

High quality headphones do not work well with PCI sound cards. I myself have an Audigy gamer that I use with a cheap pair of headphones - Audigy output jack is not great quality and there tends to be interference from other equipment in the PC.

You wont hurt the headphones or anything but don't buy quality headphones just to use with a PC soundcard.

External Audigy drive might be an option if you are set on getting great headphone out with a PC.
