Hi,

I've got a Behringer ADA8000 8-Channel mic preamp/analog in with ADAT
output. I've also got a Soundcraft Spirit Studio 16/8/2 desk. In your
experience, subjectively, which would you choose for its preamps (the
Behringer pres, or the Soundcraft pres with direct outs at line level into
the Behringer)? It's most likely to be used for micing a drum kit.

Before anyone asks, yes, I know, I should do the tests myself and see what
*I* think of the sound, but it's all in storage at the moment and getting it
out would be a major hassle, so if anyone has already got any answers or
opinions they would be gratefully received!

I also know that putting a line-in signal to the Behringer ADA8000 runs it
through the mic preamp at unity gain anyway, so would this degrade the
signal to the point where I may as well use the Behringer mic preamp?

Thanks for any help.

Hi TJ,
this topic intreastes me also, I also use the Behringer UB pres in my
small studio, and i dont mind them. I have also used the Mackies
extensively, and while I have not had a chance to do any AB
comparisons, i prefer the Behringers. I have also had the odd
oppertunity to use soundcraft consoles, and was not to impress.

However, onw cheap pre that did impress me are the ones that come with
the Yamaha MG boards.

My 2 paise..

Try both. The pre's in the Sprit Studio consoles are fairly decent.

The ADA8000 runs the line-in signal through an attenuator
that knocks the signal way down, and then it amplifies the
signal in accordance with your chosen setting of the gain
control. This is a tad different than what you said.

For most practical purposes, especially if you are *not*
running the Behringer's gain control very near or at
extremely high or extremely low gain.

What does my experience have to do with your experience? You have
both. Why not try them yourself and compare? I'll bet it's not going
to be a night-and-day experience, but for me, I'd go with using the
real console because it'll make everything easier.

Will you get one or the the other out of storage? Or will you get one
out of storage and have to buy the other? Neither one is very big. Get
them both. We've had some pretty lame excuses for not trying an
experiment but this one has to be pretty close to the top of the list.

So are you going to use the ADA8000 for your A/D converter anyway? And
if you used the Soundcraft, it would be line out to the line in of the
ADA8000? That would be a tough call, but I'd say just go ahead and use
the Behringer barefoot until you start scratching your head trying to
figure out how you'll monitor when doing overdubs, how you'll feed
headphones, how you'll adjust the playback volume. Then you'll get the
console out of storage.

FYI...the line outputs of the ADA8000 are not connected to the analog
inputs...just the DA converters.
