I'm just about to buy a digi 002 rack (I already have an mbox and am
very happy with protools). I need at least two extra preamps
(preferably four) so I can record drums with it. I'd prefer to spend
under £200. I've been looking at some various Behringer preamps and
mixers, does anyone have any suggestions?
Cheers
Nick
I know I may get flamed for this, but here goes... I added a Behringer
ADA-8000 to my 002r and it worked so well that I kept it and now use it
with my HD1 - 96I/O system. Originally, I was more interested in 8
additional outputs to give me access to analog outboard and analog
summing during mixing. The 96I/O analog outs and the Behringer analog
(converted lightpipe) outputs are indistiguishable. I never even tried
the mic pres until recently. They sound fine as well, and are very
convenient with both XLR-mic and 1/4"-inst inputs right on the front
panel.
On this newsgroup there was a thread a year or so ago that revealed the
fact that the 24bit converters on the ADA8000 were the same that are
used in the current Alesis multitrack. Whatever they are, the
conversion and analog amplification sound good.
I will continue to use my favorite preamps (Sontec/API), but if in a
pinch I have to add live inputs I won't hesitate for a second to plug
into the ADA8000.
The best part for this cheap irishman, is the price was less than $200
at GC.
If you or your clients are Behringerphobic, you can always cross out
Behringer and write in "Neve" or "Telefunken" in crayon.

<flame> Had a hearing test recently? That thing sounds worse than a 001, and
that's no mean feat.

Seriously though, if you dig it, cool. I auditioned one recently, and
while I admittadly (I know I may get flamed for this) didn't do the
'double blind' thing, the difference to me between that, a 001, and an
Alesis AI3 was, while not profound, still apparent and made the AI3
worth the little extra scratch.
I really gotta figure out how to get my hands on an HD rig...

-joe.

How about the Behringer ADA8000? I've just realised you can use an adat
connection, so I've started looking into those. Also the PreSonus
DIGIMAX LT. It's about 3 times the price but I imagine with better
preamps (SOS thinks so anyway), does anyone think it's worth the extra
money?

I think if you're going to spend the time to set up a real Pro Tools
system, the LEAST you can do is get decent preamps and converters.
Eight channels of conversion that sounds good is a lot better than
sixteen channels that don't.
