Top 10 Reasons to Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

(1)Help protect your PC from harmful attachments.

By alerting you to potentially unsafe attachments, Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) helps guard your computer from viruses that can spread through Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, and Windows Messenger.

(2)Improve your privacy when you’re on the Web.

SP2 helps protect your private information by applying the security settings that guard your PC to the files and content downloaded using Internet Explorer.

(3)Avoid potentially unsafe downloads.

Internet Explorer download monitoring and the Internet Explorer Information Bar warn you about potentially harmful downloads and give you the option to block files that could be malicious.

(4)Reduce annoying pop-ups.

Internet Explorer Pop-Up Blocker makes browsing the Internet more enjoyable by helping you reduce the unwanted ads and content that pop up when you’re browsing the Web.

(5)Get firewall protection from startup to shutdown.

The powerful, built-in Windows Firewall is now turned on by default. This helps protect Windows XP against viruses and worms that can spread over the Internet.

(6)Take control of your security settings.

The new Windows Security Center allows you to easily view your security status and manage key security settings in one convenient place.

(7)Get the latest updates easily.

Enhancements to Windows XP’s Automatic Updates feature make it even easier to access Windows updates. Plus, new technology has been added to help dial-up customers download updates more efficiently.

(8)Help protect your e-mail address.

Improvements to Outlook Express help reduce unwanted e-mail by limiting the possibility of your e-mail address being validated by potential spammers.

(9)Take action against crashes caused by browser add-ons.

The new Add-On Manager in Internet Explorer lets you easily view and control add-ons to reduce the potential for crashes and enjoy a more trouble-free browsing experience.

(10)Go wireless without the hassle.

SP2 improves wireless support and simplifies the process of discovering and connecting to wireless networks in your home or on the road.

I thought my Firewall/anti-virus I had to spend money on was already doing all this accept for the Wirless connection.

What a load of ]-[orse ]-[ockey Microsoft had to patch the crap out of their OS so the internet hackers would stop using it to strain large boulders with "sieve".

All the fancy needle point to patch all the damn holes is hidden in the background of SP2. The extra resource hungry crap we now have to deal with is window dressing, no pun intended..............

well using Firefox.
AVG anti-virus
Kerio firewall...

makes me think that i don't need SP2, it seems they are fixing the OS for "software" programs that they have bundled with it, and why i would need 1.8 Gb of free space for the installation baffles me.

i think Micorsoft should perhaps seperate the OS development team from ALL the other development teams for their other software, it might create a much better system in the long run :D

No Jake I realized that I was saying (free Link) because some schools provide software to students via their own servers. That software is very clean and safe for download.

Mozilla is an always has been a sort of back door Trojan they log keystrokes you make and log much of your internet activity, as well as building Registry control keys in your computer. They have for years everyone knows this. AngelFire free web hosting was doing it to for some time until they got busted!! Nothing is free...

Excuse me I am a back door Trojan I hear you have data on your computer could I please look at it for a second...hmmm and your Browser goes sure... your.... a Great Trojan.. take a look at everything I own and don't forget to take my credit card number its under...never mind you know where it is. Close the door on the way out, I mean Port!!

I at one time liked third party Browsers but after Netscape kept updating their software into a pile of waste I went back to Explorer and never used another Browser since.

I used to love Netscape for a few reasons, one was because it was invented by Astronomers so they could correlate data between different observatory's world wide on the same target in the night sky and they wanted real time data. That is how Netscape was born, but since the first versions it has become a cluttered virus infected mess.

Besides MS spends millions a day to try and close all the holes in Explorer and that is millions more then any other Browser party would spend in a year.

If you drink Wine you would want to drink the good stuff right ? Just because something is different then the norm does not mean it is better, and like all things it's generally not.

Of course if no one decided to try something different from the norm then things would get boring. Good luck with your browser software. What you don't know won't hurt you. Of course MS is just as guilty of back doors they use and doors they provide security corporations with for their use that none of us know about. They have Kernels buried so deep you would need a super computer to crack them. I have talked to a few after that last SP2 update and they have interesting observations as well. The size of the update did not even cover the initial SP1 and Microsoft update security patches that were initially present.

Homeland Security within the U.S, Canada and European Countries is foremost on all the Engineering guys minds. There is a big present within XP and its not a Candy flavoured snow cone!!

This is hardly paranoia and was not first mentioned by me either simply information talked about and read online from other well informed people. Considering the escalation in world events the monitoring of the internet is priority one for those that need to know.

The U.S even publicly came out after 911 and said they were developing software to do this as part of Home Land Security and you can bet your last buck that SP2 has part of that code written into it.

I am trying to be serious with you Jake as best I can make the point.

If you play online games off a Network like Steam for Half Life or Day Of Defeat the kids there that hack can go right through your fire wall and anti-virus like it was not even installed.

If they really want to fucck with you they can disable your software so it still appears to be working at start-up and even still updates.

Part of the trick is knowing when your [-peep-] has been disabled. With Norton Fire wall the fonts in the splash screens become slightly corrupted and you can see the letters are messed up.

With MacAfee fire wall the fire wall logs stop reporting traffic in and out or show very limited network usage another clue that it has been compromised.

One of the best all around fire wall programs around is generally free to some extent in P.C Cillin as it comes free on many Motherboard drivers CD's.

They can disable that puppy so it looks like it is working when in fact it is doing nothing.

Don't be so quick to think that you are safe because your not no one is not even MS is safe as proven by the numerous intrusions to the Microsoft update site.

I know of hackers online that can walk into your computer 2 minutes or less after you log to a UDP game server.
Most of the problems there is you have to allow the Ports and IP numbers for the game you play online in the first place on your fire wall so more then 90% of the hackers job is done before he fuccks with you.

I have a friend in Texas they keep setting his computer clock back in game all the damn time. 3 Different computers he tries to use and they still do it. Why ? not a big deal it causes latency at his end and packet loss causing him to walk around the game environment out of sync with the other players. He cant shoot anyone he sees and cant see the guy who shot him. Simple hacker trick to disable a player from competing but they still went right into his P.C to do it without any problems.

In fact if you look at software like Lock Folder XP provided by Everstrike Software one of the Key things they provide built into the software is to be able to lock your computers date and time specifically to prevent time stamp fraud.

This APC 650VA may not even last through the new PC I'm gettin', which will likely draw well over 400W on load. Guess I'm gonna have to actually change the UPS too.

Been eyeing this excellently priced APC RS 1000VA with 8 power outlets for only 139$ CDN, which is roughly 100$ US. If you ask me, the 600W protection and the APC quality is most definitely more than worth it at that price.

I agree! I've got an APC BACK-UPS 1100 Pro and it has saved me so much trouble, I suspected power fluctuations had something to do with the problems I was having, but since getting the APC my troubles have literally disappeared. Crashes from power fluctuations is a thing of the past, dropped connections too, definitely do not regret spending the bucks for the gain.

Vic I looked for the receipt but couldn't find it, I'm pretty sure it was around $120.00 US, 1100va handles a solid 670W load, 6 power outlets that support power strips, telephone line and network NIC line protection, guaranteed lightning, surge, and brownout protection to $150,000 equipment damage coverage, over 40min runtine with a 19" monitor, supports 2 normal PC's or 1 high performance gaming rig and external modem. Is that what you wanted to know or do you want the exact specs?

I have the APC PowerChute software set to shut my computer down after one minute of battery use.
Ironically I have had it for a year and whenever a black out happened in my area my computer wasn't on!
It has flipped to battery operation for a few seconds for a couple of brownouts. The surge supression has probably been used a few times too.
[Do'h]I think its better to use a UPS to shut your computer down safely in a black out event.[/Do'h]
I paid $60 CAD plus tax for it. The online APC store price seems too high. Even at Staples its only $70 plus tax where I live.

Hehe, you been hearing too much of my self-advertisement haven't you.

Staples has that 139$ CDN UPS. At least, their website does. I'll be sure to get it if it stays that way. I paid friggin 249$ plus tax for this 650VA (400W) one!

I'm surprised your UPS still is ok with a Prescott 9800XT system. It shoulda blown a fuse or something with such power hungry equipment.

What's weird about your UPS' specs though, is that the RS one does 5.9 minutes at maximum load (600W), yet your UPS at max load does 1.6 minutes. I don't get how max load varies between each if both are sucking up the theoretical maximum. Your UPS is half the power load of the RS 1000VA.

Vic I got mine from a Sams club in the US, Sams Clubs are bulk warehouse sales clubs that are owned by the Walmart corp, the APC 1100va Back-Ups Pro is actually last years model, when Sams first got it in, it was around $150.00 US.

I watched the price drop to around $120.00 and got 2 of them, one for my gaming machine and one for my wifes machine and the cable modem.

From the prices I've seen in places like Besy Buy for the 800va I snagged a really good deal.

I didn't mention the powerchute program that came with it because we do not run our computers all the time, so I don't have the powerchute set to auto shutdown the machine, I have it set so if in a power failure it will switch to battery and allow me to shutdown myself.

The 1100va is actually the bottom end of the server class, from what I've been able to find out from APC, and the only information you can get from APC on the 1100va Pro is by inputting the exact SN at the website.

And the only place you will even today buy an 1100va is from a place like Sams Club that still has some last years models at a reduced price.

Every time I'd enter Win98, I would get a registry corrupt error, would have to restart and have it restore a previous copy of the registry, as if it would do anything. It would work, but next time you boot back, it will do the same error.

Basically even the rarest power outages can be a reason to protect yourself against them, and most certainly when working on something important. I had the power cut off once during some important work on the comp IIRC, and luckily my UPS came in.

All I know though, is that it definitely helps big time for me. It has saved me so many times.

I used to have all those problems with hardware failing due to hydro issues but also because of shiity power supplies and the Dish Washer snapping the breaker.

I rewired the Fuse block for the house and built a computer with robust hardware, almost bullet proof now.

Hydro goes out around Kanata only when war breaks out and its big time Ka Booms like the Ice storms and the East Coast power grid failure.

I considered a back-up power supply for some time but since I have this main system going I am very happy with it and it is even more stable with less upkeep air cooled and off the water cooling.

I leave it on now 24/7 but it took a long time to find an Anti-virus and fire wall set-up that would allow me to do it.

I only restart the PC now before and after games online and that after a fast scan of this and that to make sure it's all cool before I reboot.

A reboot after an online game if they got a bug into you is a death manoeuvre you would never see it hook into the system. Better to run a few scans first and since this P.C runs so fast it only takes seconds to do a few safe guard checks.
