Just getting into this stuff, could someone advise a newbie on the pros &
cons of using either Logic or Digital Performer? Selecting these (2) as
they're recommended to interface nicely with my Motif ES.

Will be using it with a dual-processor PowerMacG5 @ 2.3 GHz.

Wow, I can't imagine any conspicuous advantages that one has over the
other as far as a newbie is concerned. Maybe, if you're visually
inclined, the more flexible color coding options of Logic would be more
appealing? But both are remarkably capable programs that can do
basically anything you'd ever need to do in contemporary music
production, and since you've never used either program before (or, I
presume, any other DAW?) there's no reason you'd necessarily favor one
over the other.

If you are a new to DAW's.. (?) I'd highly recomend checking out a
newish DAW 'Tracktion'. You can try the demo. It runs on OSX too.

Tracktion was an indepandant project till recently, when Mackie
endorsed it. Check the help forums at

Don't know much about Logic, but I've been using DP for about 4 years.
It's a great app. I do a lot of soundtrack work and use a lot of MIDI
tracks and audio tracks as well. I also produce independent artist's
CD's. DP has been really flexible to use. It's very intuitive.

However, from what I've heard from users of Logic - if you are into
working with loops and doing a lot of electronic music, Logic may have
the upper hand for that kind of application.

You might check out www.unicornation.com. It's a BB for all things
Motu, but there is always plenty of discussion on Logic vs DP there.
That way you could dialog with users of both programs and get some
pretty useful info.

Hope that helps.
