I need a laptop for business, image processing (Photoshop), and some gaming (first person shooters). I've found a couple that are similar in price and configuration with one significant difference. One offers a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX and 100GB 7200RPM hd, the other a 256MB ATI Mobility™ Radeon X1900 and dual 100GB 7200RPM hds in a RAID 0 array. The second system also allows overclocking (2.33 --> 2.66).

I have a pair of 15K ultra SCSI2 hd's RAID 0 in my desktop and understand the hd access benefit, but I'm not sure how to compare the RAID 0 + 256mb video with the single hd + 512mb video in a laptop. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Access time isn't going to be affected with by the GPU in any way.

Do you have a budget? I am assuming that it is fairly high. If I am right then look at Killer Notebooks' Executioner. You can get the best of both worlds with it. It comes with a 512mb 7950 and has the option for RAID. Now the only downside, but this goes for all RAID laptops, is that you lose the integrated CD/DVD drive.

Don't try to do both in one.

Get a nice laptop for biz and a desktop for gaming.

You don''t want some 30 minute battery life laptop for biz.

I disagree with asusman. Photoshop won't be kind to any "battery saving" laptop because they'll ship with a mediocre gpu. You'll want the best graphics card too if you're doing any serious graphic work. Because of that, you'll be getting a power hog.
edit: you'll also want the biggest screen to see what you're working on. <= that won't come with a power mizer notebook either....

Not a big deal... plug it in, and it's still mobile. People whine about a short battery life... just ask them how long their desktop will run unplugged and if they could drop by with it.

Go for the better gpu. Graphics are mass storage, therefore you'll probably be finding yourself needing an external storage device anyway.

RAID 0 is an extremely bad idea on a notebook. It has absolutely no fault tolerance and if something goes wrong all your data is gone. It may be possible to recover it, but difficult.
