Hi, im somewhat new when it comes to specific hardware specifications and stuff. I need some help choosing the right RAM for my computer. I have a Dell 8300 that I bought in early May of this year. It is a Pentium 4, with a 2.66Gighz and 533mhz front side bus (just missed the 800mhz). I have 256mb of the standard dell memory they gave me, and if it means anything, a Radeon 9800 pro. Someone told me that because I have a 533mhz front side bus, anything above pc 2700 would be a waste. If anyone could help me out with this, I would be very greatful. Also, if its possible, could someone tell me how I could overclock my front side bus to 800mhz? You dont have to, im just asking. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me.
No....your cpu has a max fsb bandwith of 4200mB/s...so you could use pc4200...assuming there was a divider...i would stick to whatever your dell currently uses...normally it is in the specs of the computer...
if dell uses pc2100
and you put in pc2700
it will run at pc2100...so you will waste your money...
Didnt you say that my computer could use pc4200 though? Why does the ram that I have in my computer limit what I can buy? Cant I just take the old ram out and replace it with this better ram?
i said you could...assuming you had the right memory/fsb divider...i never said you did...i was being theoretical to show that your freind was in fact wrong...
You could use pc4200...but i doubt the dell board would allow you to set a memory/fsb divider that would take advantage of the memory...
So just get the same speed mem as you currently have on your board....
Well the motherboard I have is an Intel 875p. Its pretty new, so I would assume it would have these dividers? How can I check to see if it does or not.
no...it probably does not...just listen to me and get the ram that your computer comes with...if it is pc2700 then get pc2700 ram...if it is pc2100...then get that...
You will not be able to set up the dividers because dell uses a stripped down bios...
