I've Hynix 128MB DDR RAM on my computer. The OS is Windows 2000 Pro. When I view the system info, it shows only 96MB, and none of the applications (e.g. Word XP) accepts the RAM as 128MB. I've three DDR slots on the motherboard, and the RAM is inserted into the second slot. What could be the problem?

32MB allocated to VGA aperture?

Though I couldn't make it work, thanks anyway.

Well, I don't know whether the 32MB is allocated to VGA aperture! I'm quite nil in hardware. So, please, could you help me further?

Do you know how to get into the bios?

When the machine boots, it usually says something like:
"Hit Del to Enter Setup"

Usually the "Del"ete key gets you into the bios. If you have the manual for your motherboard you could take a look at that before starting.

Anyway you won't be able to get rid of it.

I don't have 2000 handy. Give a detailed description on how you determine how much memory you have and maybe someone with 2000 can check it for you (to see if it involves the aperture size).

it does not...my apature is set to 128mb...and i have 512mb of memory...and that is how much shows up in 2k...

However...i would recomend reading your post screen....when it does the memory count during post...how much does it count...could be you got a bad module? or a mismarked module...

I agree with PIII man. I've exactly the same (512MB RAM and 128MB aperture) and every program I can remember running said the same (ie. SiSoft Sandra, PCMark, 3DMark 2k1, etc.).

I have seen this kind of behavior somewhere. I think it may have been a mobo with built in graphics.

Either that or some software utility.

Can't remember but wish I could  .

Most of these guys are skating around the obvious question, do you have onboard video? If so, part of your RAM is dedicated to video by BIOS and is inaccessable to the rest of your system.
