A couple of days ago my Enermax 350w PSU gave up on me.
I had been away for a few days and decided to turn off my computer during that time.
When I got home and powered up my computer it started to smell peculiar after a few minutes.
Suspicious as I am I decided to hit the power button and turn my comp off before things might have got nasty.
I've had this PSU for a year or so, should they not live a litte longer than that?
On a side note, my comp is on 24/7

Yes they should, for many years theoretically, allthough no line of technical equipment is totally free from defects. You might just be very unfortunate and got a PSU with a slight fault in it thatcauzed it to die.
Something else you might want to consider, poor and dirty mains power can also sometimes lead to power supplies dying prematurely.
You might have got a power surge while you were away... who knows?
Do you experience many power issues where you live?
