I'm planning on buying a desktop replacement soon. I've been looking at Asus mainly with a budget ceiling of 1400-1500. Mainly, I need something reasonably fast and futureproofed (T7200ish, 2 gigs of ram) with a good videocard (I'd like a 7700, but an X1600 seems more likely). Gaming isn't my main priority (this is for school), but a gaming capable machine would be preferable. I'm not sure on whether I should get a 5400rpm 160 gig drive or a 7200rpm 100 gig drive; I've heard conflicting things about what's best for mobile use. The computer I've been considering most serious is an Asus Z96J from this site, as all the Dell machines I've seen have had rather unimpressive specs for the price, and I can't afford Apple markup. I looked at the Asus G1, but the price difference between it and the Z96J is over 400 with the only difference being the 7700 over the X1600 and the hideous omg1337 case over the bland-but-sane one. If there are alternatives, though, I'm definitely interested. Any advice would be welcome.

Try the ASUS A8 series. They have a 14.1 inch screen but come with either ATi X1700 or Go 7700. They are priced around 1400 on Newegg.com. It's a good deal IMO.

As a side, you think the G1 is ass ugly???

5400RPM vs 7200RPM is dependent on how you use it. If you don't mind losing the space and a little battery time, the 7200 will be noticably more responsive. So if you're going to be plugged in a lot and don't need 60GB more space, definitely the 7200.

I looked at the A8 series, but there seems to be quite a premium over the Z96 series that's hard to justify when you're still getting a smaller screen. Because I won't have a monitor to hook into, getting a 15.4" WSXGA+ is pretty important to me. Is it at all realistic to try and get what I can get with the Z96J (T7200, 2 gigs of DDR2 667, and a 100 gig 7200 Travelstar) with an X1700 or 7700 without paying a $400 premium? The X1700 or 7700 would be nice, but I can't justify that kind of a leap for such a thin margin.

And, yeah, I think the G1 is ugly. I guess a lot of people disagree, but I think it looks hilarious compared to Apple's clean designs. It's busy and full of omg1337 green and fake cf like it needs to compensate. If I were getting one, I'd go crazy trying to rip that stuff off or cover it up. Maybe that's just me.

Jasum: someone I know told me that 7200 actually consumes less power because it needs to spin for less time compared to 5400. Is there any truth to that? The extra storage space would be nice (I have a lot of music), but if I get an external hard drive to store stuff on, it's not absolutely critical.

I based that on a conversation I had yesterday with a friend (who works in desktop support) about a laptop that had a 5400RPM drive capable of being "underclocked" to 4200RPM to save battery life. I'll try and research this some more if I get the chance tomorow.
