So basically what I want is a laptop that is under $1000. The lower the better.

Things I would like:
1) Wifi (duh)
2) Ability to watch DVDs
3) At least a 40gb HD
4) Minor gaming capabilities (Gametap games, games like titans quest, WoW, etc.) I do not mind if games run on lower settings.

I have been looking at Acer and some Dell stuff, but I really have no clue. Any ideas?

I have been trying to do the same.
It seems the lowest is really going to be between HP and dell.

I was able to price a E1505 with a coupon (20%) with the 120 gb hd, x1400, dvd writer, lgb ram for $830. Its the best ive come up with so far. The only negative so far is that its comes with Vista.

As a previous user of an Acer 3003 laptop for 1 1/2 years.
Great laptop for a budget, a bit cheaply built(just a bit), crappy battery life, cpu on the money, integrated ati xpress chipset great for gametap and can do WoW low.

Please stay away from celeron.

This one is decent, also be aware of heat issues( it gets hot and can burn important areas when on lap :P).

GL! This is the lowest I found thats decent.
