Hi folks:

US readers: In case you need any 120GB Ultra-ATA hard drives, Best Buy has a
sale on Seagate Barracudas. $99.99 with a $60 rebate > $39.99 net price. Not
bad; I grabbed one. The sale runs for a couple more days.

Peace,
Paul

Whenever I get the urge to buy a disk drive, it seems that either Best
Buy, Office Depot, Staples, or Circuit City has something suitable
for, after rebates, an absurdly low price. A month ago, I bought a
120 GB Western Digital Caviar for $99.95, less one rebate of $40 and
another rebate of $30, for a total price (when I get my money back) of
$29.95. And to think that in another thread people are bragging that
8 GB flash memory cards are down to around $250!

By the way, I just got a new flyer from Micro Center this morning and
they have a 100 GB PATA Maxtor for $29.95 after $70 worth of
rebates. What the heck is PATA? Parallel ATA? One of those names
that someone felt they had to come up with because we have SATA?
Like because people started using LDC, we're stuck with SDC too?

These deals look like "loss leaders" but I suppose they don't call
them that in the advertisements anymore (also, not everyone does what
they're supposed to do to get the rebate). I paid more for a 120gig a
few months ago through pricewatch.com. Current price is $53.

This is for the 'old fashioned' "EIDE" drives?

There's a name for these back-formed words (road bike, acoustic
guitar), but I forget what it is. If I remember it I'll post it on my
cork bulletin board.

They count on that, but I've never "missed" a rebate. Rebates are
funny, and they piss most of us off, but they work if you follow the
instructions. But for eight weeks, they have 99 of my dollars and then
they give me back 70. Good thing interest rates are so low that I'm
probably only losing fifteen cents on the deal (well, and the postage,
too).

That's what I was wondering. But the one right next to it in the flyer
(200 GB) is described by the more conventional "IDE UltraDMA ATA/133."

And another thing. How come when I'm ready to buy a Firewire drive
case, all I can find at a sensible price are USB2.0 ones? I know, I
know, there are dealers selling them on eBay for $29 (with $19
shipping) but I want to buy from a local store so I can return it if
it doesn't work with my system. I've already tried three or four,
found one of the lot that worked with my PCMCIA Firewire adapter, but
it was too expensive to keep ($79 or something like that),
particularly since the main reason I wanted one turned out to be a dud.

Another thing about rebates that i've experienced in long waits , is
calling them to follow
through [ long after the amount of time they quote ] and having the cheque
suddenly
show up after that . Hmmmmm???? but a couple of times having it honored
after the
cut off dates . I wouldn't count on it , but i would give it a try .
Maddening , though to
remember how much or many that one is waiting for to be even !

regards Greg

Best Buy is notorious for putting rebate signs on the merchandise a week
or so before the rebate period starts & leaving the signs up a week or so
after the rebate period has expired. So you have to be really careful to
make sure there's actually a rebate being offered on the item you're
buying at the time you're buying it.

A few years back, they didn't even have the rebate coupons in the store.
You had to call their 800 #, sit on hold, describe your purchase to a
person whose native language was not English. Then you had to hope the
sent you the right coupon & that it actually arrived before the mail-in
expiration date. I think they might have gotten sued over that, because
now the coupon prints at the cash register.

But they do work if you follow the instructions.

Another thing they used to do is offer something that looks like a
rebate until you read the fine print and discover that it's a Best Buy
gift card - good against another Best Buy purchase, but not cash back
in your pocket. Once when I asked a salesman exactly what the deal was
on a disk drive, he assured me that it was a real rebate, and added
that they used to do the gift card thing but had stopped because they
got so many complaints from customers who misunderstood and thought
they were getting money back.

Maybe that was before Best Buy moved into my area. Here, the rebate
coupon is automatically printed out at the cash register, along with a
duplicate receipt that you have to submit with the rebate form. The
last disk drive I bought had two rebates, one from Best Buy, the other
from Western Digital, and I got about a yard of paper with the two
rebate forms, the two duplicate receipts, and the actual receipt. I
was fast enough to read the rebate instructions before I left the
store, and since you had to submit a copy of the UPC label with one of
the rebate forms (and the actual label with the other), I asked them
to copy the UPC for me, and they happily did that. That's nice for a
retired guy like me who doesn't work in an office with a copy machine.

I never even think about it for about 8 weeks, and generally the check
shows up just about when they say it will.

Yup, must be one of them "retronyms". :-)
