alternatives to the M-Audio bx5?

I'm setting up a little midi production centre at home (I have my full
studio elsewhere). I can get a pair of bx5's for about $200 USD off
ebay and I don't feel like spending much more than that. If YOU were in
the same boat what used $200 powered monitors would you buy?
Thanks

I bought a pair of new bx5's from sam ash about 3 months ago. I had
been using jbl 4206's passive and i reallty idnd't like them. These m
audios are real cheap fro sure, but for some reason I have a pretty
easy time mixing with them. They are bass deficient, but other than
that, reasonably neutral, and I know what to expect out of them.

I was prepared to buy some $200/pair monitors to use for a portable
playback system and, after doing some listening, decided not to buy
anything. There was nothing in that price range that was able to give
me what I needed.

If this is a working place, spend more money. If it's just for
listening to playbacks to evaluate content, use a boom box or just get
whatever's convenient in that price range and what you feel
comfortable listening to. There's nothing that stands out from the
pack as either best or worst, just different.

If that's all I had to spend I wouldn't get powered monitors. I'd get a
pair of Infinity Primus 140 or 150 speakers and an old Adcom GFA-535
amplifier.

Interesting suggestion. Some years ago I picked up two pair
of Infinity 2000.1 speakers to use as low end DAW monitors.
The Primus 150s at $70 each seem to be their logical
descendents.

I have a set of BX5s in one of my rooms . They're just fine. Quite good for
an edit room actually.

I'm sure they would be. However,

"MIDI production centre" to me suggests music, quite possiblly full
range music, and that means you want to hear what it really sounds
like, not just on small monitors. BX5s or something similar would
certainly allow him to hear melodies and harmonies, so if he was
willing to let the actual mixing, blending, and balancing go until he
got to his "real" studio, they'd work for the purpose. But no point in
agonizing over what's best, because they all have their deficiencies.

uh.. right.. there's NEVER any music in an edit room. In fact they work just
fine for composition.; Of course I would not mix on them.
