I was wondering if anyone has any experience with smaller portable wave
recorders? I am looking for something with a built in mic and with an
option which allows you to plug in a stereo line in (from my mixer). I
would like it to record at CD quality (44.1, 16bit) and have a levels
display. Looking for a price range of $200. Anyone know if such an
animal is sold? I found the edirol r1 but this seems overkill in terms
of features , size and price. I am envisioning something more like an
I-POd with the ability to record wave files thru a line in (I also must
be able to digitally transfer these wave files to my main computer for
processing).
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction,

Check out the Nomad Jukebox 3. If you look into the archives you will
find plenty about it. Unfortuantly, it is no longer in production; but
there are several on ebay in your price range. I just got one and really
like it.

Currently available, there's the Edirol R-1, and the soon-to-be-released
M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96. (Please see our Web site for pre-ordering of
the MicroTrack 24/96.)
For discontinued products there's the Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox 3, the
iRiver iHP-120 and -140 (also known as the H-120 and -140). Neither of
those offers metering.
If you have a low cost A-to-D (like the $20 unit from Radio Shack) you
can feed our PDAudio system.
That M-Audio MicroTrack seems like what I am looking for, however it is
more expensive than I was hoping for. Isn't it odd that some small
devices like this cost $500 when that is the cost of a cheap Laptop
computer? Makes me wonder if I should just get a laptop with a
firewire por on it to do some basic audio recording on??? Perhaps it
would be nice if someone made a small device like the MicroTrack which
instead of taking analog signals took Firewire or USB so then you could
hook up your audio interface (Firepod, etc), then just record onto the
device. This way, you wouldn't have to worry about the quality of the
AD convertors and you could save money by using your current equipment.

Yeah, but you don't have to buy software for it, or an audio
interface, and it has controls on it so you don't need a mouse. I'd
say it was a pretty good bargain for what it is.

Sure, if you want to lug around and set up all that stuff.

Core Sound makes a card for a PDA that takes a digital input. You
could connct that to a mic preamp with a digital output (which they
also make) and have a portable recorder. But you'll find that the
Microtrack (Core Sound is also an M-Audio dealer so they'll sell you
either one) is cheaper.

Please check our our Web site and you'll see that it costs less than
$400.

When will they be available? "Mid August" is all that I can find. If
they're going to be in stock by Mid August, they would have already
shipped from the factory.

Looks like delivery is slipping. It has slipped into September already...
http://www.core-sound.com/microtrack_2496.html "M-Audio has not announced release or ship dates for MicroTrack 24/96 though
we expect initial shipment in September 2005. "

From years of experience in the field, I'd call that "Maybe by Christamas." <g>

I should have checked the price on your site, I saw that M-audio has
the MSRP at $500. $400 sounds much more reasonable. I will certainly
have a closer look at it once it is released. Thanks for the
information.

Latest news from M-Audio is that they'll ship early September.
