Hello to all,
I was wondering if anyone has or knows where i can get hold of a FREE
service manual for a Sony AV amplifier model no. TA-VE150.
Theres a fair few on the internet, but they arnt free. As im not sure my
problem can be found with the service manual im not willing to pay for one.
The problem Im having is whenever the amp is turned on it automatically goes
into protect mode. I believe this is due to the fan because it never spins
up. Speaker overload isnt an option or volume because i ran it on one
speaker on min volume and it still does it automatically.
If anyone can help with this I would be most appreciative.

Just to add, I couldnt find a decent homecin forum to ask so thought this
one may be able to help me more!!
TIA

This is a VERY common problem with these. Every pin of all five output ICs
will be dry jointed. Reflow them all and you should be ok. Note that you
will need to screw the board back down before retesting, otherwise you will
get the same result due to floating grounds.
There was a complicated Sony mod for the fan to make it cut in earlier, (
yours will run, but only when the heatsink is about to melt, and you are
playing drum and bass at full volume ... ) but this still allows the
heatsink to run so hot that you can't touch it when the amp is idling, and
this is what gives rise to the cracked joints in the first place.
We used to mod them by shorting across Q853, the fan switch transistor's
driver transistor. As I recall, it was the left hand two legs of this Tr,
looking in from the back with the board the right way up, so the transistor
is to your right. We just used to put a blob of solder across between the
legs. This has the effect of running the fan at full chat all the time,
which results in a MUCH happier heatsink. The actual fan switch transistor
is Q852
Hope this helps
Geoff

Before you do anything else, get the fan working. You know it's broken, and
a basic rule of repair is to fix the stuff known to be broken before you
start tackling the more subtle things. If it cures the protection problem,
well and good. If not, that's when you start looking for the tougher stuff.

This "one"?
You crossposted to 5 different newsgroups, including one that only deals
with live sound!!! (now removed from crossposts).
Crossposting is bad mm-kay? If you have to post to more than one forum,
especially if they are unrelated, post to each group individually.

He doesn't necessarily know that the fan is broken. He, and you, are
assuming that the fan runs all the time. If you know these amps, you will
know that it does not run all the time. The system control decides when to
run the fan, based on heatsink temperature AND drive conditions.
As I said in my earlier post, if anyone bothers to read it, the amplifier
has got to virtually be on fire before the system control determines that it
needs cooling, and this is the ( well known ) cause of the bad joints on the
output ICs, which his amplifier is almost certainly suffering from.

Doesn't make it easy for fully sighted people to follow a conversation
either ...
And then there is the issue of replying to a post without quoting anything
of what you are replying to, making responses have little or no context or
meaning,
And then there is the crosspostin got multiple newsgroups....

DOESN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE, BECAUSE NO ONE BOTHERS TO FOLLOW THE BLOODY
THREADS ANYWAY. I'VE LOST COUNT OF THE NUMBER OF TIMES THAT I'VE SAID
SOMETHING, AND THREE FURTHER DOWN THE THREAD, SOMEONE'S SAID THE SAME THING.
THERE'S NO NEED TO QUOTE ANYTHING IF YOU'RE JUST REPLYING TO THE LAST ENTRY
IN THE THREAD THAT YOU'VE ATTACHED TO. IF PEOPLE ARE FOLLOWING THE THREAD,
THEY'LL KNOW WHAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO. PRESERVING GREAT BIG LONG POSTS IS A
SILLY WASTE OF SPACE, AND THE PRACTICE OF POSTING
' SNIPPET ' REPLIES IN THE MIDDLE OF EXISTING POSTS IS ANOTHER SILLY AND
CONFUSING THING, WHICH MAKES A THREAD HARD TO FOLLOW.
AND REALLY SCREWS THE CONTEXT AND MEANING.
AND IT'S ARFA not ARTA
AND JUST BECAUSE YOU WEAR SOCKS WITH YOUR SANDALS, DON'T ASSUME THAT
EVERYONE IS THE SAME.
THIS GROUP USED TO HAVE SENSIBLE PEOPLE ON IT, WHO GENUINELY TRIED TO HELP
ONE ANOTHER. NOW, IT JUST SEEMS TO BE FULL OF PEOPLE WITH SPOOF ADDRESSES
WHO JUST WANT TO SEE HOW SMART ARSED THEY CAN BE. KEEP IT.
THERE. I HOPE THAT'S IN THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOU ALL, AND YOU CAN READ IT OK.
Dave, I haven't forgotten you, just been a bit busy. I'll get the schematics
copied and pdf'd and mailed to you direct.
