According to my tech, the output transformer in my C451 is bad. I remember
reading about it not being stellar anyway. Any suggestions as to how to
solve the problem?

TIA,

** It's works well enough.

** Have your tech get a new one from the local AKG dealer.

Both. The mic body only shows signs of life through manual stimulation.

I'm not aware of such thing as a local AKG dealer, but I'll do the research.
Thanks.

** Forget that nonsense !!

AKG have distributors & service agents all over the world - including the
former Yugoslavia.

The list is here:

Not really, because the original is pretty tiny. It's going to be hard to
get anything too much better in there.

You could try sending it, and the schematic, to Per Lundahl. The problem
is that it's got phantom across the secondary and they are using a
center tap to pull the phantom off, which means the two sides of the
secondary have to be absolutely perfectly balanced. Lundahl does not
make anything like that, but they might if you ask when Per comes back
from vacation.

You're going to have to tolerate some low-end drop-off, though. Maybe
less than the original.

You're right. There is a distributor here, AVC. That's why I was unaware of
it. They are a company that has had a hold on the large systems like
national tv and radio. They do retail, too, but as an afterthought. Whenever
I asked them for a quote they were 30-40% more expensive than anybody else.
I haven't heard of a single private studio owner who has bought anything
from them and, since I can't prove that I did so with this microphone, they
are unlikely to move a finger. I can still try, though.

Or all countries with a distributor, try that distributor. I'm sure that's
what Karl would
suggest.

Convert to transformerless? Jim Williams does a nice job of this. Come
to think of it, he can probably refer you to a customer who has
transformer takeouts (I have a bunch of C460B transformers if you need
one of those...)

Transformerless would be fine. However, shipping to the States and back
would probably make the total cost of the Jim Williams mod prohibitively
expensive. The same old problem.

Actually, I have quite a few pieces of gear right now (LXP-1, LXP-5, dbx
263x, AKG C460 etc.) that I would gladly send to him if it weren't for the
shipping costs and hassle with the customs.

I don't think the C460 transformers would fit there, but thanks for the
offer.

I would keep it as spare parts.

The cost involved in a TL mod would be a bit crazy... and it wouldn't sound
like a 451 anymore.

I'd be surprised if AKG Austria didn't have spares.

That's my only C451 so I can live with it, but the first part of your
sentence is giving me headaches.

I've contacted the croatian distributor. They said they would call me back
with a quote yesterday. Nothing so far.

Drop Jim an email and ask if he has any takeouts from C451's.
