I've been hunting down the source of a hum (not ground loop) from my
Music Hall MMF-5 turntable for quite some time now. The hum is very
low level and is ok for listening but in a recording application such
as mine it is unacceptable. At first I thought it could be a faulty
transformer so I replaced it but still same problem.

This morning I finally found the source--the cartridge is picking up
electromagnetic intereference from the motor. I took the glass platter
off and moved the tonearm around and this became very obvious as the
hum increased as I moved the cartridge towards the motor.

My question is--does anybody have suggestions for cartridges that do
not pick up EMI as much as the one I am using (Goldring 1012gx, came
stock with the TT)? does anyone have similar experience with this kind
of problem?

and/or

does anyone have suggestions for how to go about shielding the
cartridge from the motor? I don't particularly want to take the TT
apart, but would like to have some solution in hand if this hum will
persist with other cartridges.

thanks to all in advance.

** Most phono cartridges are fairly well shielded from mag fields by the
use of mu-metal housings.

Maybe yours is not.

** Why not shield the motor from the cartridge ???

A strip of transformer lamination material ( as used in toroidal cores)
wrapped all around it and tied in place may be all that is needed.

Thanks Phil. I just found an interesting post regarding this issue--

http://groups-beta.google.com/grou [...] 503db1473f

"In Vol 3/#3 of Primyl Vinyl, we found a simple fix for the problem. A
sheet of .004" Co-Netic AA EMI shielding foil from Magnetic Shield on
the plinth (holes cut for motor pulley and bearing) in the area the
arm moves over does the trick. It's 15" wide @ $32 a foot-only
problem is they have a $50 minimum order so you have enough to do two
or three decks. Maybe the other posters with similar problems will
split it with you, or you could line the power amp chassis with the
extra:-) "

This is a very common problem and it is especially worse with the
Grados.

Is it magnetic pickup, or electrostatic pickup? If it's magnetic,
there is nothing you can do about it. If it's electrostatic, you can
easily shield it with thin brass foil (shim stock works well), or
purchase a shielded version from the manufacturer as an option.

If you have an electronically-controlled motor, this could also be
an issue with the motor drive electronics producing more trash than
they should.
