I have a Palm M125 with dozens of registered programs installed. I
need to transfer them to my new Clie TH55. I know how to transfer the
apps, but it will take me days to find the registration info and
register all the software. The user name on both handhelds is the
same, but the Clie required me to install a new Palm Desktop. Is there
a program that will do this for me? Thank You, Dan.

Beaming might work in some cases. But I've seen apps that store the
registration info on an PDB that's not related (as far as the system sees)
to the application, so it won't beam automatically.
Also, you might need tools like Filez to remove the "lock" flag that might
prevent some apps from beaming.

Get an SD card, and get BackupMan. Do a backup of your M125 to
the SD card, put that card into the Sony, and do a restore.
Everything should work. Do a hotsync with the Sony desktop, and
you have it backed up.

Sony's use memory sticks, and not SD cards.
However, there's no need to make it that hard (and expensive). Simply
hotsync the M125, then run the migration wizard that Sony has included.

Unfortunately, the migration wizard doesn't transfer
applications--only address books, to-do list, etc. I thought that all
I needed to do was hot sync, but the TH55 required the installation of
a new Palm Desktop, and after installing it my previous profiles were
no longer recognized. Any more ideas? I need to get this done today.
Thank You, Dan.

Even if one of them hadn't been a Sony, your recommendation would almost
certainly not work, and could lead to an unstable or non-working device.
Many of the files that are not backed up through normal backup are not
backed up because they're *device specific* or *OS revision specific*, and
restoring them to a different device shouldn't be done. It's like taking a
backup of C:\WINDOWS under Windows98 and restoring it under Windows XP. No,
sorry, shouldn't be done.

Go through your original Palm install (which defaults to either C:\Palm or
C:\Program Files\Palm depending on version), and you'll find a folder based
on your username. Inside that, you'll find a Backup folder. Inside that,
you'll find all the apps that were backed up. Simply double-click them and
they should be installed at the next sync.
Normally, this would happen automatically when syncing the TH55 for the
first time, unless you set a new username on the device, but doing it
manually should work just as well.

Thanks for the response. I have no problem installing all the apps.
The challenge comes in finding all of the registration codes. I am
looking for a way to transfer the program as well as the registration
info to a new handheld with the same user name. Thank You. Dan

It's not installing them, it's restoring them, including any databases for
them, which may contain the registration info you need.

See above, but quite often registration info is saved in the "Unsaved
Preferences" database, which should NEVER be restored across devices, as it
contains device specific settings (you don't want the digitizer to be
calibrated for 160x160 on the TH55, for example). Yes, it's a pain, but
that's the choice of the author of those programs.

Once you do find all of the registration codes, you might consider
keeping them all in one place so that if you go through a machine
change again, you'll be all set to re-enter the codes. I keep them as
a Memo Pad entry.

I do the same. I used to use an app called SoftTrack, but it
doesn't work properly under OS5. It automatically got all the
information and exported it to memos. I really wish Palmgear
would update it.
