low timings = random restarts?

Can having the timings on memory too low, run stable, but randomly restart the pc? I'm running my twinmos 3200 cl2.5 memory at 200mhz cl 2/3/3/10 on 2.8v, but it randomly restarts and hangs the pc.

This has happened a few times now. Once when I was running prime @ 2334mhz/203fsb @ tight timings and just now when I started playing CS. I have overclocked my 2500xp to 2300mhz on stock voltage, but its prime stable for hours like this and it restarts when I start a game or whenever I do anything really...

I replaced my psu thinking this was the problem, but as I spend more time tweaking my system, I think I'm just forcing my memory to run at timings it cant really handle?

Yes, a memory error can cause a miss that crashes a program. You might try running memtest86 for a few hours to see what happens.

Although the solution is very easy...back off the timmings and see if cs works...if it does then your memory is at fault...

Thanks for the replies. It ran memtest fine at my current settings of 199mhz cas 2/3/3/10 2.8v but I think I lowered the voltage last time to 2.67 and that may be why it restarted. I've ruled out PSU because I have a new 480w antec.

Its not an overheating problem because it would do the same thing with the side panel off and a 12" fan blowing over the case. I'm leaning towards either a memory problem or motherboard problem, but I'm getting either some corsair 3700 or twinmos 3700 and I will see how it goes then.

I cant be bothered to run it at cas 2.5 because the performance drop is too much. I will try that if having it at 199mhz/cas 2 doesnt work. If its not one thing its another with pc's these days!

maybe you should tone down your overclock? could be the cpu...

Also if you have an early revision nvidia mobo...then it may be your chipset...try adding some chipset cooling...
