This might already be in play, but I'd like to see recording software
include a place where you can insert a reference song (wav, mp3, etc.) that
you can quickly switch back and forth from to check your mix against
commercial mixes.
You can do this now by importing and soloing etc. but it would be nice if it
was just a feature in the software and could be done quickly and easily.

Google for the "FreeFilter" plugin (available in both VST and DirectX).
It compares the spectrum of two music clips and shows you the difference
visually, and provides an EQ curve to make clip "B" match clip "A".

It couldn't be much easier than it is now IMO. Most DAW's should let you
import the mix by reference versus actually copying it into project (meaning
it's almost instantaneous to add it). Put it (or a holder track for it) in
your basic template along with an "exclusive solo" (Sonar allows this so
assume most other pro-level DAWs do too) and you're ready to go.
