This is the first EQ mag that I have enjoyed in many, many months: all
microphones. There is an interesting article starting on page 12 "The
Attack of the Clones" about U47 clones. Also, starting on page 18
"Episode Three: The Real Mic World" where the C12VR and other mics are
discussed. The author (J.J. Blair) gives his take on all these mics.
I always find it interesting to hear what other people hear. I don't
doubt that they somehow hear it, but I often don't hear the same
things! For instance, he describes the UM91.1 as dark and lacking in
high end. (No, he is not talking about the UM57 - read it more closely)
I distinctly remember that when this mic hit the streets in Chicago,
the word was out that the mic was too bright! I have a pair of them
and I find them very open with a ton of "air." Also, he says they are
"much like the C12VR." Jeez, to my ears, nothing could be further from
the truth. They are like night and day different. I also differ
considerably on his opinion of the Blue Cactus. He found it lousy on
piano and limited on vocals. I find it one of my first go-to mics for
a whole variety of things (magic on vocals, superb on trumpet, clarinet
and excellent on piano!) But I enjoyed hearing his opinions
nonetheless. Check it out; it's not a computer issue, for a change.
