I have a 20 GB WD HDD with the XP Home OS and data files on the drive. I am unable to get into the HD using any DOS command or by launching WIN XP. (my system32 file on that drive is bad).
I cant restore the drive to a "former good config" or even get a cursor C prompt to work. Can I slave this WD HDD to a new WD HDD master and then "look at" and copy files from the slave drive to the new master drive? I need to recover some files from the MY DOCUMENTS folder as well as some data from my QUICK BOOKS PRO. Thanks.

Yes you can.
1 note though. Be sure to install the os on the new hard drive before you install the slave drive. With the slave drive already haveing xp on it it might cause problems with booting.
Also be sure to set the jumper to slave on the old hard drive.

That is assuming the drive is not faulty or the electronics have burned out.

From the description you've given I'm not sure that this disk is even accessible or still working.

Why do you think your HDD is still working? Is it seen and properly reported by the bios?

Make sure they're both in Primary IDE cahnnel.
One Slave, one secondary.
