MSI+AMD2000XP+WinXP=Headache!

Hi,

Just replaced an old biostar mobo and amd 1700XP to a MSI mobo and AMD 2000XP. Got a DVD drive, CD-RW and an IBM HD in the case. Left the case and PSU unchanged.

Installed WinXP about 3 times today but everytime I have the same problem. When the system boots up I get lag of between 30-60secs before I can launch any app. During this lag-time I can't do anything but move the mouse around.

Someone's suggested it could be a PSU issue in the sense the PSU is inadequate. Just needed a few more opinions before I buy a replacement PSU. My current PSU is a stock Suntek (came with the case). Rated at 300W I think. I've very little knowledge of PSU's but would appreciate if someone can help out. Thx :)

People would have to know what other hardware you have crammed into your machine to judge if the power supply were inadequate.

If the power supply were/is faulty I suppose ur system specs/graphics card wouldn't matter.

300Watts generally becomes inadequate when coupled with a higher level graphics cards. Lots of memory and a bunch of disk drives could have the same effect.

Soo what is your graphics card? How much memory do you have in the machine? What is the size of the HDD?

Maybe improperly or as yet uninstalled drivers? Driver conflicts?

The loving are the daring!

Sorry, I neglected to mention:
256mb ram chip
128 mb ram chip (both are PC2100)
40gig IBM HD
DVD drive
Teac CD-RW drive
ASUS 64MB GE Force 3 (8200 Deluxe I think)
KT2 Combo mobo
AMD 2000XP CPU (using stock cpu heatsink/fan combo that came with the CPU).

Not using any other case or cooling fans. Thx.

From the above we see there's about a 10Watt difference in the draw of the 1700 vs the 2000. That is about the same as a stick of 128MB of RAM.

If you want to confirm it is the Power Supply I would remove one of your sticks of ram. Take the DVD or CDRW offline too (but it shouldn't be drawing power).

The mobo may draw some additional as well of course. But not likely to be over 10Watts.

All in all I don't see why it should suddenly be your PSU.

Are you sure all your drivers are installed?

The loving are the daring!

Yes all drivers are installed and there are no conflicts or errors.

I have been toying with some things from the web pages you gave me the links to. It seems my problems may be related to some services as I've found by disabling a lot of them I am not getting the lag problem.

Thanks very much for the URL mate. You may have saved me some money in the process. ;)

holy crap...look at the thermal output of the c3!

But damn 64k of L2 cache....thats worse than a CUmine celeron...

I bet if they gave it 256kb of cache...it wouldnt be too bad of a cpu...
