Anyone here played this yet? My bro bought it right when it came out, and I've been playing basically since about then.
The thing I like about it is how I don't want to play it all the time. I can't sit around and play for 2 or 3 hours. I usually end up just playing for a half hour to an hour, then quitting and starting up again in a day or two. It's been a few weeks I guess and I'm still not done.
I really like the creepiness of it, although that aspect has worn off some the more I have played it. I still do find myself being startled every now and again though.
The graphics are really amazing. I think in comparison to the videos that I've seen on Half-Life 2, Doom 3 has better character graphics while Half-Life 2 seems to have a more immersive and impressive enviornment, both graphically and physics-wise.
I have no idea if I'm close to the end. I've gone through maybe a dozen levels or so and have all the weapons including the Soul Cube. I got back from Hell I think 4 levels ago, and I'm on the 2nd Caverns level. I think I'm almost there though.
I am very impressed with this game. I can't wait until mods come out that improve on it's fairly dismall multiplayer. Bad lag and problems finding games (they all seem to be password protected) make me not want to try multiplayer anymore.
All in all I give this game a 8/10. Single player reminds me of the first Half-Life, how it really does a great job of putting you in a story rather than just shooting monsters all day. But, multiplayer sucks so I have to take off 2 points because I know the replay value of single player mode will be virtually non-existent. Great game, and I suggest anyone who was thinking about getting it, but hasn't yet, definately should.

I couldn't play for more than 15 or 30 minutes and just got bored with it. I only played it for a week and I've since then uninstalled it.

Yeah it was pretty much the same thing over and over. Enter a room, it's all dark, turn on flashlight, start walking, get it in the ass from some monster you passed in a corner, switch to gun, shoot blindly for a while, all the time still getting raped in the ass by other monsters. Finally clear the room, reload, go to next room, repeat.

I think the game was well varied. There was a lot of going into a dark room and getting spooked, but that's the style it was going for. You could say the same thing about most FPS games.
What I liked was how you couldn't just mindlessly shoot. If you did that, you'd run out of ammo. They seemed to make it so certain monsters in certain situations were more vulnerable to certain weapons. If you tried to go machine-gun only, you'd waste all your ammo going against monsters that don't die easily by it.
I seemed to walk around mostly witht he shotgun, because the most common enemy, the Imps, were most vulerable to that gun. Some enemies, like the rocket-firing skeleton dudes dropped fastest with the plasma rifle or grenades at closer range. The machine gun or hand gun worked best against the spider thingies and the flaming heads. Why use a gun against the zombies when you can just use the chainsaw?

Way to think diverse Ksoth!
That's what people are missing. They generalize it down to "enter a room, shoot, go out, repeat". No one seemed to try to look further than that.
Even then though, the game's name gives it all away. You want a DOOM experience all over or not! If ya don't want that style, then why try. I thought the name was gonna be pretty obvious about what it delivers, really.
Linear? Who cares! In such game, non-linear gameplay could be more annoying than anything!
Spook factor is quite high, although I wish I had a 5.1 Surround sound system. Lately I've been more startled though.
I dunno how it works with you that you stop playing for a while then come back, and back in, because that kind of gameplay, I'd assume, would make the game's lasting impression to be weak. But hey, I play it about once a week because of busy work and school. I'm at Delta Labs 1, LOL. 'tis ok, I'm lovin' it.
BTW, how in the world would you not know we've discussed this game? It was in several threads. Hehe, Ksoth, damn you, you're slipping! The OTHER NEEDS yoooooouuuu....

Well, usually when I look at the threads, I don't really read the ones the I first see that already have dozens and dozens of posts, because it's too much to try and get caught up with everything that's been written, unless I'm really interested in it.
I just don't post much here. I've been trying to get more involved in the actual computer sections again, like when I first came here, but most topics are already answered by the time I see them. Sometimes the Other section is totally dead and nothing new when I visit, or others there are new topics with 200 posts.
I like playing every couple days to make the game last longer. Plus, the game is really spooky!!! I'd probably wet my pants if I played it for too long. Well, not really...
Delta Labs 1... You've got a ways to go. I figured that since the purpose of the game was to meet up with the other Marines in Delta Labs, once you got there you'd be done. But no, it throws all sorts of surprises at you. I think I'm about 7 or 8 or more levels past Delta Labs 1.

Also, I think one of the reasons I don't play it too much is because my brothers computer is the only one in the house that is good enough to play it. He's got a 3000+ and 9800 Pro, while I'm stuck with a 2500+ and a GeForce 4 Ti4200.
I think though, when HL2 comes out, I will be forced to atleast buy a new video card for my computer.

No, it's the truth. DooM was a mindless action FPS very much like SS and Painkiller. Action was the key word. Ever played Plutonia on nightmare? That was DooM. A third-person evil Mario if you will, with great music. And the evil was more like an awesome B-movie evil. Killer Klowns from outerspace evil.
How does DooM3 emulate in any way what I just described? It doesn't. One can very well argue about the merits of the game as a stand-alone; it has plenty, but lets not compare two completly different games.
DooM3 is not a bad game, it's quite good, but it's not even close to the game revolution that was the original.
The day Microsoft will make something that doesn't suck is the day they'll start making vacuum cleaners.
No one said it was a revolution over DOOM. It basically IS Doom.
They gave it more flesh, but the basic gist of it is the same. Grab some hidden item, BAM, some enemy will come. That's the DOOM style.
Get close to some door or trap, BAM, some monster will appear behind it or near you.
I see it as a DOOM game, and although it's slower, it doesn't matter, it still carries the name. I can't fathom how you could even make such game work on modern PCs if it had DOOM II or Serious Sam style of packs of monsters.
I finished Plutonia Experiment in medium difficulty, as it was hard enough as it is. I don't think anyone's ever beaten it in Nightmare. Not if DOOM II was nearly impossible that way.
And again, what you're stating is relative. Plenty of people find this DOOM all over. You can't in any way try to justify it's the truth. It's relative. On the other side, it makes it much easier for anyone having played the old DOOM and is hesitating on DOOM III to tell them they might enjoy it if they imagine a DOOM experience and not a Half-Life one. You're not gonna get interactive worlds like HL, you're not going to have much gameplay variety like HL, you're simply on your way to Hell like DOOM was, flicking switches, and now enjoying some extras like the PDAs and stuff. It's easier to go with the mindset of a simple FPS with complex graphics than a break-through Half-Life killer with awesome graphics.

The reason why Doom I and II were mindless shooters because they didn't have the technology back then to make them immersive. You just couldn't do it like Doom III does it.
I think Doom III is what the creators obviously wished they could have made Doom I and II like, but just couldn't.

I can't keep interest enough to finish it. It's still installed, but I've not played for like 2 weeks. As for it's spook factor, strangely enough I think painkiller creeped me out more than Doom3. But I didn't finish it, either.

Well I just finished it today. I was actually pretty disappointed at the end, both the end boss and the cinematic. The end boss was very easy once you figure out what you have to do, and it isn't that hard to figure it out.

Currently doing Evilution. Plutonia wasn't as fun as DOOM II for me. I found it more exagerated and it had less of an apocalyptic feel, less serious. Especially with that maze level with the Archviles, let alone the amount of them used in that game. Everything that was to be feared and amazing in DOOM II is overused until it becomes typical in Plutonia. Still found myself hella addicted to continue though. I liked it a lot, just not as much as DOOM II.

Dunno, I think with the arrival of Duke 3D about a year after Doom II, we had a good idea how much they could really do. D3D had great interactivity and variety. Instant classic, or the Doom-killer before Half-Life changed things again.
I still sometimes get startled in DOOM games, or even feel a little nervous before certain areas. Try it at night like DOOM III, with headphones on. Game works really well like that because the sounds in DOOM are far more intensive than DOOM III. Monsters really sound more scary.

Man, even before the actual part where you begin to play for real, I was scared. The atmosphere, although filled with soldiers everywhere, didn't feel very familiar, you just felt like anything could come at you, despite everyone being there around ya.

Well, depends on how far you want to take it in immersion. You paly with 2 cheap 10$ speakers and you ain't gonna get much.
And besides, you say it like I'm the first one to say that. Check out pretty much anyone's impression of it when they play it (well, those who played at least through it or most of it).
