If you're not going to overclock the system you'd better take 512MB pc2700. pc3200 will give you more headroom if you're going to OC, or it will allow you more aggressive timings and thus a slightly faster system. But 256MB is a bit tiny for a really super PC; I would go for the 512MB

Generic brands will be more likely to be DOA, tend to have more compatibility issues, stability issues, shorter life, and are generally just not as well made. Stick with the name brands, especially at higher speeds. Check with the mobo manufacturer for a list of approved or recommended memory vendors.

actually generic value ram is the same as fast memory....just not rated as high.....alot of times this doesnt mean that it fails at the faster speed. Alot of times the valuse ram sells alot more volume than the fastest ram. This means that it's labeled lower because thats what sells. Business sense. Anyway, I've never had any problems.

I own an intel 865perlk board and DDR400 ram. It runs great at the default setting of CL2.5 3-3-3-8. Can anyone shed some light on these settings and what faster settings can I test.

Thanks
EC

umm you must've made a mistake you mean 2.5-3-3-8? or 3-3-3-8 if it's that then it's not cl2.5 settings.

Name brand are much better but it comes at much higher cost, for example my OCZ memory did 240 at 2.0-3-3-8

it all depends who you get the memory from...i would not recomend generic ram...but would recomend value ram from brands like kingson, corsair, crucial, geil....

nForce2 mobos over 200mhz FSB is known to have best performance at these timings 2-2-2-11. It's really bizarre but some guy actually tested and most ppl agreed with him. You should try it, just to confirm if this guy's right or if he's BS.
