Ok, my new system configuration is still in flux, but I was thinking about a Gigabyte G-8KNXP mobo and a P4 2.8, but I'm not sure what ram to go with this. I'm looking for 1 gig total, and hopefully to spend less than $300. I'm not a hard-core overclocker, but some ability to oc would be nice. Any suggestions please?

Personnaly I really like the Geil Golden Dragon. It offers good performance and its cheaper than corsair/kingston alternative. The PC3500 offers the same timming as PC3200 and it will give you a little bit of overclocking room.
I made 2 system Geil Golden Dragon and a P4P800, really pleased with the performance and the stability. Runs real good at the specified timming and frequency of 2-3-3-6 but timmings wont go any lower than that and frequency wont go much higher.
Other options is OCZ, really good overclocking potential.
Corsair LL serie and kingston HyperX are awsome but you have to shell out the money.

Good luck

just a word of caution, ocsystem.com is ranked like 2/10 on a customer based review site (don't remember the link) I have ordered from them before, but it was just some round cables, however, it did take 2 weeks for my 25 dollar next day air shipping. I've heard they swap ram too and give slower ram then purchased. Don't know anything about the golden ram though, it DOES look nice :)

I've purchased a G-8KNXP and a set of 512 PC3200 Kingston Hyper X, latency is around 2.2 and i think it might be to aggressive for the board because i've not once been able to get passed the windows xp pro bar moving 1 and 1/2 times across before a sudden reboot *you can vaguely make out a memory error as it reboots* and as far as i have noticed im unable to slow this ram down enough to work in the bios, so you might want to consider something other than this particular memory, unless i just have some bad luck.

i completely dazed that the error could have been caused by windows and my obvious new hardware... a quick repair and it works fine, so nevermind the GA-8KNXP and the KHX3200K2/1G work flawlessly together
