I think I need a headworn mic for some video VO work I need to do. The
DPA 4066 and 4088 have been highly recommended, but they're pricey. Any
suggestions for less expensive alternatives?

The Countryman is less expensive and pretty good.

The Shure SM-12 is cheap and is better than you'd expect.

I will, of course, try and discourage you from using the headworn mike if
you can at all avoid it. But sometimes you can't avoid it.

Gasoline will probably up to $3/gallon in most of the US in a couple
more weeks.

You can't work the mike... it's always in the same place. It's easy to pop.

But it's been a long time since I've seen any sportscasters with Coles lip
mikes...

You don't know how lucky you are.

Here in the Netherlands It's around EUR 1,40 per liter now. That
translates to around US$ 6,47 per (US) gallon.

if the talent is going to be very active, be aware of the possibility
of sweat entering the mic and ruining it.

I get a lot of AKG C444 headsets with salted-up capsules, from aerobics.
They are sweat-resistant, but not water-proof ! The gymns don't seem
impressed when I suggest they employ fitter instructors who won't sweat so
much ! ;-)
