This is sort of a weird problem I've had since I first installed XP last winter -
Every once in a while, I will notice my performance drop severely. I kill all open programs; no effect. Checking the task manager reveals IEXPLORE.EXE is taking 99% of my CPU, even though I have no internet explorer windows open.
Killing IEXPLORE.EXE via the task manager solves the problem.
Obviously, it's not a big deal since it's so easily fixed. I'm just wondering if anyone else knows the cause.

That is weird. I haven't noticed that at all. Have you installed all the critical updates for IE?

You might try repairing the browser:
