I just recently put Win 2K on my old computer. Everything works fine except for the shut down routine. When I try to shut down the machine it restarts every time. Currently, I will wait till the machine is ready to restart and power off the machine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this??

The machine's stats:
Intel PII 266
Asus P2L97 mother board
Matrox Millenium II video card
160 MB of memory
Western Digital 6.4 GB hard drive.

Thanks.

Have you installed <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp2/" target="_new">Service Pack 2</A>?

Do you have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0?

Are all your drivers up-to-date?

Win2K or WinXP may encounter a problem during startup that results in a STOP error message. Depending on the system configuration, the error message on a blue screen may not be displayed long enough to record the error information. To gather important information about the STOP error message and to verify the cause:

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .

On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .

Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure, and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

Generally, the error message is searchable at the <A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;rid;kbinfo" target="_new">Microsoft Knowledge Base</A>.

To answer your questions.

Service Pack 2 is intalled.

Easy CD creator is not installed.

I updated the drivers when I reformatted the machine to put 2K on it.

Currently, the machine doesn't seem to be failing. I did what you said to do and it just restarted again no blue screen.

Thanks,
MEP

I don't know if this is applicable, but your system is old enough that ACPI may not have been installed.

<A HREF="http://www.dfi.com.tw/support1/Hot Issues/HotAns062.htm" target="_new">How come the ACPI function fails to work under Windows 2000 and my system cannot shutdown automatically?</A>

Check the options for your system in the Control Panel Power Managment (or Options) dialogue. You might also wish to check the Power Management settings in your BIOS.

Thanks for the info. It was because my system is so old (circa 1997). Asus doesn't support a late enough Bios to help either. Shutting off power management settings allows it to go to the "ready to shut off" screen.

Thanks,
