a question concerning RAM

I highly doubt it's the ram, more likely just running out of CPU, perhaps a
hard drive issue.

Using Windows? Do Ctrl-Alt-Del and click on task manager. Click the
Processes tab. Start your sequencer, and watch the memory usage for the
sequencer app. If it's huge, say 600 MB, then you might need more RAM.

yes, it is. its a 2.1 or so ghz processor, and i have 2 hard drives with
about 5-10gb free on each.

Plugins generally need a little memory and a lot of processor power.

Plugins which are sample players with big sample sets definitely
benefit from lots of memory.

What program? What plugins? You aren't giving us much to go on.
