Hi all. Thanks for your support with my last enquiry. :)

I was hoping you had some opinions on what I should expect from my soon to be arriving;

P4P800 Deluxe Mobo
4x 512mb DDR 400mhz Generic RAM

but running with my current cpu, a P4 2ghz mPGA-478 100mhz FSB...

Does my cpu inhibit me reaching 400mhz with my 2gb of RAM?
Can I even do that?

What would you generally expect from this setup?

Thankyou :)

no, no performance loss, or at least very negligable if any (because of more memory to adress?). However there is no point buying pc3200 for a dual channel chipset and using a 100mhz bus cpu, you will be providing 2x more bandwith than the cpu can use.

Thanks :)

HWM I'm doing some heavy duty graphics and 3d. I'd like to be able to continue to work while I'm rendering with much more ease than I can now. I'd like to bring my cpu up soon too. I guess this is a first second step... too excessive?

Also I can zero my paging file now right?

piii_Man should I upgrade to a 400mhz bus cpu or 800mhz to use the full bandwidth? And does speed increase in proportion?

Let's dispell some myths first:

Dual Channel makes DDR400 have the same bandwidth as an "800 bus" P4. The actual clock rate of both busses is 200MHz.

With your CPU you'll have a 100MHz bus. In dual channel mode, you'll only need PC1600 for optimal performance. PC2100 is more common and can be underclocked to PC1600 speeds without problems. But then again, so can PC3200.

I'd go with PC3200 if you plan on upgrading the CPU to an 800 bus version in the future.

Having your memory at DDR200 speed in dual channel is just as good as having it at DDR400 speed in single channel mode.

yes 800mhz bus would really help your cpu shine, a 2.4ghz p4 with 800mhz bus beats the the P4 2.66 with 533mhz bus in just about all benchmarks (i am just trying to show how it increases the efficiency of the proc).

A while back i asked some people on this forum to try to run their ram at pc1600 speeds on the dual channel nforce 2 chipset and run their fsb at 200mhz sdr (400mhz ddr), i am sure many would have been surprised by the performance. But then again, who listens to me?

I don't think the nForce2 version of "dual channel" has a true 128-bit memory pathway.
