pc specs:

wondows xp home edition
512mb of ram
p4 1.60 ghz
adsl modem

I was running 8-9 applications:

2 internet exployer page,
getright
msn hotmail
icq
AIM
All Seeing Eye (server browser for online games)
msn messanger

I was downloading and when the download reached 100% an error accured about the download. I had to open up another window. Then this message appeared:

"Your system is low of memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process memory request for some applications may be denied."

Then I pressed "ok" and another message appeared:

"the application failed to initialise properly. (0xc000012d). Click ok to terminate the application".

I pressed "OK". I'm guessing that this message, the second one is from my download. I also noticed that in my "windows task manager" some application don't respond for a while.

I did a full system scan with Norton anti-virus with everything updated and no virus were found. A few weeks ago I had the blast virus though. And used a tool to remove it. But the damage to my pc is still there I guess. How can I fix this, please help. I don't think this is normal. Something not working properly is lowering my memory, right?

have a look at;
control panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > advanced tab > Virtual memory if it is below 512mb click change & increase the virtual memory size...

Trust me I know what I'm doing... ooops, grab the cat...

I asked symantec and they told me to do a clean boot. I did a clean boot and it doesn't seem to work.

Should I try a clean boot again or increase the virtual memory size? Which is better?

I think norton anti-virus fixed it. Windows XP really needs 1 gig of ram if you plan on using that many applications at one time. You could increase the page file size in the system properties... but if you play games or anything it couldn't hurt (well maybe your wallet)

Will work IT for food. Seriously.

ok WHAT????

What do u mean when u said "I think norton anti-virus fixed it." It didn't, I still get the low memory message.

And how can increasing my page file size hurt my wallet??? Can I damage my pc???

At the risk of stating the obvious. Getting more momory can hurt you wallet cause it costs money. Get it? Try increasing your page file size. It is possible your page file is corrupted. Try disabling the page file. Reboot and enable it again. Your problem might be solved.

ok I can do all this to try to fix the problem. But I don't see why cuz I don't notice any difference from before I had this problem. But remember I don't no alot about computers. So can u or someone else tell me what usually are the problems when this message appears?

ok never mind I just notice a problem. I have problems opening my windows. So I guess this is caused because I have low memory

I disabled my page file, rebooted then enable my page file. Can I leave the page file disabled. What will happen if I do? But now that it's enabled again there's nothing in: "initial size" and "maximum size". So what am I suppose to type in there?

You can take a performance hit for keeping your page file disabled, as well as having the system do weird things....like CRASH. If you run out of memory while doing an operation, the system won't be able to use the page file as extra temporary memory, and the program or possibly your computer will most likely crash.

I recommend a 1024 MB (1 GB) cache on initial, as well as maximum cache settings for a general use computer. This amount will typically give you good performance without lagging too much.

Ok, so you have to put your "2 cents" in, but its value is only "A penny's worth". Who gets that extra penny?

"without lagging too much" In a online game u mean????

Someone from the game forum in this site said that low memory DOESN'T make a game lag online. But it will lower the framerate.

And like I said before. When I enabled my page file again there's nothing in: "initial size" and "maximum size". So what am I suppose to type in there? I have 512 mb of ram.

No don't leave your page file dissabled. Put 750mb min and 1.5gig max. That should do it.

Currently my virtual memory is set to "system managed size". Under it says:

minimum allowed: 2mb
recommended: 766 mb
currently allocated 767mb

Should I leave it like that instead or select "custom size" and type what you guys told me???

Edited by Zemuron on 10/08/03 09:50 PM.

By using the term "lagging", I was referring to hard drive seek time lag, or memory usage lag. I was not referring to internet "lag" time, nor did I make any reference to the internet in my post.

You can either leave your page file like that and let the system decide, or you can choose custom. BUT, if you choose to use custom, you must ensure that you set enough of a page file, but not too much, into the page file.

If you choose custom, Again, as I mentioned earlier, for your INITIAL size....at least 1024 MB (1 GB), so you would enter at least the number 1024 into the space.

and for the MAXIMUM size....at least 1024 MB (1 GB) so you would enter at least the number 1024 into the space.

When you keep your page file set at a constant size...initial AND maximum, you get better performance. You may want to keep your initial AND maximum sizes the same.

ok thanx

But I think I'm going to leave it to "system managed size". But when I leave it there what's my INITIAL size(MB) and MAXIMUM size(MB)?

Each system is different. It would be hard to tell what your settings will be when you set to system managed.

It would most likely be the same numbers that you had posted earlier....2 mb and 768 mb...I think were the numbers.
