Hi
Can anyone here recommend a reasonable but not too expensive CDR-burner (for
PC) or point out what features to look for?

Arguably the best low cost alternative is Liteon, and for a
little more you can still get Plextor which are excellent.

I bought an LG 4163 which will burn anything, including DVD-RAM. It's
turned out to be the best of the 4 burners I've owned so far (2 Lite-Ons and
an older LG.) The software supplied is Cyberlink and Nero Express, which
I've found to be quite satisfactory.

Is there any reason why a straight CD writer rather than a DVD writer
should be used for audio work?

I'd recommend a DVD writer - even the cheapest ones now will write any
DVD+/-RW/RAM/dual-layer discs, and they cost only a little more than a
dedicated CD-writer. DVD media is now the same price as CD media, in
some cases even cheaper. No point in limiting yourself; having the DVD
capability is good for backup if nothing else (a DVD should hold a whole
song's worth of 24-track ADAT audio with room to spare, for example).

I'll second that.

only 'Plextor Premium'. There are plenty of Plextors that are nothing special.
I found out the hard way by buying one used (for a premium price for a used
old burner) that turned out to be nothing more than a rebranded Creative drive
with twice the ram. Plextools doesn't support it or even recognize it as being
a Plextor drive. Perhaps someone could post the good model #s that are
currently on the market.

None at all - provided you are using a good quality drive.

Cheers

What model number do you have? I don't know of any Plextor drives that
aren't recognised by Plextools.

If you want a Plextor for serious burning then I would suggest the Premium
CD writer or the PX712 or 716 CD/DVD drives. These are the only models
that support Plextools' error checking features. The DVD drives write
perfectly good CD's so I would suggest going for one of those if you can
afford it.

Cheers.

James.

How do you know for sure that you didn't buy a Plextor case into which a
different burner had been installed?

Why does this program require a Pentium processor? What happens if your
computer used an AMD?

Is there any application released in the last 5 years that doesn't require a
Pentium class processor - not to mention an OS ? (The term Pentium can be
broadly used to describe a class of processor of certain minimum instruction
data and address capability , and power, thus including AMD equivalents).
Like, 'not a 386 or 486'.

> Why does this program require a Pentium processor?

It may be using instructions introduced only in later processors, or may
be tuned for the performance characteristics of later processors -- or
the publisher may simply not want to deal with anyone who tries running
it on an older processor; you could try it, but if it doesn't work
you're on your own.

(As others noted, this should probably read "Pentium-class" rather than
"Pentium" specifically.)

Come to that, I don't know ANY drive that isn't recognised by
Plextools. But the program is rather more fussy about which drives
support the error-analysis functions.
