Audigy2 Cant do Digital 5.1?

Forum CPU & Components : Sound Cards Audigy2 Cant do Digital 5.1?

Hello all, hoping someone out there can help me with this problem Ive struggled with for awhile.

I have an audigy2 platinum Ex, (and an audigy platinum, which has a simmilar problem). I would like to send 5.1 digital audio to my receiver. It seems I have 4 options for sending 5.1 audio:
1)current which works, 3 3.5mm to RCA stereo cables (to receiver) to do analog 5.1

2)optical- apparently cannot send a 5.1 signal (is always 2ch, creative support says it is only 2ch, so WTF is it there for? an optical out that cant send ac-3? I dont get it)

3) spdif out(audigy)->spdif in(receiver) again, only gets 2ch, should work tho hunh?

4)3.5mm digital jack to ? Im told theres a magical cable that goes into the audigys d-out 3.5mm jack, and on the other end is spdif for my receiver. So what is this magic cable and where can I buy it? (no cable anyone has ever sold me has worked at more than 2ch)
The creative website tells me it is a "3.5mm mono stereo to rca cable" is that like the whitish black cable? cause I got no clue what a "mono stereo" cable is, but i might be retarded.

So any suggestions? Ive tried spdif bypass, and passthrough and all the options I can imagine. Im trying to play say a divx file with an ac-3 stream, but I lose the center channel (voice) with the optical, spdif or 3.5 to spdif cables, and just get what I think is the surround channels. It works fine with the 3 analog cables, but I didnt buy this friggin card to use analog when my boards built in optical port can do 5.1 (grant it, doesnt sound as good, but why the hell is that fiber connection there if it cant send ac-3?)

Thanks for any suggestions, Im hoping that Im just not very good with audio equip yet and theres something obvious, or someone can send me the exact type of cable I need (creative gets dodgy if I ask about what type of blackish white mono stero cable I need... heh)

Thanks!

Justin

I too have audigy 2 platinum ex and I also can't play digital 5.1 thru my pioneer receiver. I wanted to play dvd audio in 5.1. I battled mine the same way you have and finally just gave up and purchased a seperate dvd audio player, leaving my audigy 2 to play in analog only. Suspect your indeed good with audio equipment, just that audigy can't do what you want. If you locate "magical cable", to play digital in 5.1, please post again.

Try going to Best Buy or something like that. They may carry adapters such as that.

An RCA cable uses those round plugs with the red and white (left and right channels) and yellow (optical) plugs, like in VCRs and such. However, you don't want mono to RCA, because that just takes the single signal and splits it in half, so the same sound goes to whatever channel. If it's stereo, then each signal is independent.

I think your current setup is best, given the limitations of this card. Using 3 stereo lines to your receiver, while not ideal, is the only way to get it to work.

To configure 5.1 sound, you need to make sure it's setup in the windows sound settings - start - control panel - sounds - speaker settings - advanced - set that menu to 5.1

Now try it out.
