Problem:
I am having problems playing DVD movies on my PC at work. The Video and/or sound are stuttering. Sometimes it is only for a few seconds every few minutes. However other times it is almost continues. The more programs running the worse the problem is. However even if I close everything down except the DVD player it still has problems. Also some DVD’s are worse than others. However Windows says there is more than 100Meg free in RAM. Any ideas why? Thanks in advance.

The problem seems to be caused by the bottleneck in USB 1.1 external DVD drive. You didn't mention what version of PowerDVD you're using, but the latest version 5 requires USB 2.0 interface.

Sorry using version 4

I also downloaded the trial version of WinDVD last night. However it still had the same problem.

Also I have a USB mouse and keyboard connected. But since I was watching a movie I wasn't using them.

So USB 1.1 doesn't even have enough band width to play a DVD?

You're right. Although theoretically USB1.1 can go as fast as 12Mbit/s (which is a bit faster than the max bit rate specified by DVD namely 9.8Mbit/s), no USB1.1 device can go that fast in reallity.

On the other hand, USB2.0 has a max transfer rate of 480Mbit/s which is more than enough for DVD playback.

So I just bought another USB 2.0 card for work. I didn't realize that DVD playback would need that high of a transfer rate.

Thanks a lot for the help.
