My Sontec MPA-1 stereo mic preamp is longing for it's bi-annual
vacation trip to Goldbond VA. It usually sounds great but has been
repaired three times already in it's 12 year life (this will be four).
Unfortunately, the phone number I have for Sontec is disconnected.
Currently, one channel sounds fine, but the left channel thumps once
every two seconds or so, while passing sigmal. There is also a white
noise kind of sound that ramps up (crescendos) just before each thump,
kind of like an old school reverse reverb that some of us old f#%*ers
were guilty of overusing back in the eighties.
Is Burgess/Sontec still in business? If not, who would best repair this
thing?
Thanks in advance.

Kevin

If I had one and couldn't contact Burgess/Sontec, I'd get it to either
Dan Zellman in NYC or Bobby Alach
<http://www.alactronics.com/repair/repair.htm> in MA.

Give Fletcher a call on Tuesday. He don't hang here no more.

Why do you bother repairing something that clearly has a profound design
fault ?

Mic pres have pretty relaxed requirements. There's no way a mic pre should
fail with such regularity.

Burgess will not answer the phone at his home either. He's there, and
he shows up at church, but letters and cards to his mail go unanswered
and a letter left on his doorstep was ignored.

This sounds like a servo circuit that is motorboating. I'd get your
local tech to look at decoupling capacitors and the servo filter
cap.

I don't know, and I have no manuals for the preamp so it's going to be
a matter of having your tech draw the schematic out for himself. As I
recall there's really nothing too weird inside there, at least compared
with the Sontec equalizers.

Oh, yes, but he's been a freak for the past forty years. I suspect you
have to be something of a freak just to live up in the mountains there.

Scott,
Thanks for the brainstorming. I plan to print your post for
whoever repairs this thing.
I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Burgess in years past. He's a
fascinating guy. When he found out that I worked in education he
excitedly spoke about his own volunteer forays in that area. If he's
done babysitting the old guys who bought his great stuff over theyears,
I'll respect that.

Dave,
Thanks for the leads for a tech - nice studio you got there! I've
already got a call in to Fletcher who orginally sold me this thing.

Pooh Bear,
The reason I still battle this particular piece is that it sounds
really good to me, but I'll admit, my patience is wearing thin.
