I've had an engine match on my computer with Fritz 8 and Shredder 9.
My computer : ca.630 Mhz, 128 Mb.
Hashtables: 28 Mb
Time: 1 min. p.engine

RESULT: Fritz8-Shredder9: +20=1-1 (20,5-1,5)

I'm very surprised, allthough the search depth of Shredder falls to 1 or 2
ply after about 20 moves. I've original software.
So, can anyone with the same kind of computer( an oldy) and with these
engines try this match out for me, so I can understand if my shredder is any
good?
Also, if you want , I would like to know the results on faster
computers.(same hash tables).

Thanks in advance,
RB

Are you sure the Shredder-book was loaded?

Shredder isn't 'the' blitz-machine, but it's definately not bad, and not
that bad.
I wont jump to conclusions, but it could sound like Shredder doesn't
consider itself to be "original." The saying is, that that's the
behaviour of an "non-original."

The Shredder book wás loaded! (Allthough I don't see why that should make a
difference . No book on either side could also be o.k)

I had heard Fritz was better at blitz (1 min) also, so I was curious. I
thought it could have something to do with processor-speed, because : In
long matches Shredder does hold it's ground! When time is short, less than 1
or 2 sec. per move , in the endgame or in bullet matches, it starts to
blunder (for instance giving away mate in 1!!!)

I've heard of this saying also, but
The CD was bought in the store, sealed off and with a serial number on the
booklet, as with my Fritz CD.
That's why I'm surprised. I contacted the store and Chessbase, but I haven't
heard anything yet....

Were the 2 engines running on the same Pc ?. If so then one of them
will use most of the PC's resources ( memory and cpu cycles )
The only way to match 2 engines is on different pcs.

I wonder if this is because you are short of RAM and Shredder is getting
swapped out to disk? If it was thinking for a couple of minutes, a second
or so to pull Shredder back into memory wouldn't be significant but, if it
only has a couple of seconds to think, most of its time would be gone
before it had chance to analyze.

Thank you for the suggestions.
Problem solved , more or less.
I guess you were right about the short of RAM. When I tried matches with
very little hash tables (4 instead of 28 Mb), Shredder went normal like
Fritz .
I still think it's strange, because with Fritz I never had problems with too
little RAM.

I would guess that the reason it's hitting Shredder rather than Fritz is
that you're running Fritz and using Shredder as a secondary engine; if you
do it the other way round, you'll probably find that Shredder wins all the
games.

The fritz interface is there to give optimal conditions for fritz always
(which is not a surprise of course, but perhaps a surprise for you).

You must check 30 variables to make it a fair match.

The first one to fix is that shredder gets 1 to 2 ply. That is not correct
of course. That's making from any engine a 1600-2000 rated player at most.

Let me quote a few other problems:
a) did you use uci shredder or native chessbase shredder?

As proven by GCP, fritz8 is when playing matches against uci engines,
putting the opponent engine after the first game (so the second game and
further) back to 1 MB hashtable and that for the rest of the match.

b) how was the system time division during the match, did fritz get 70%
system time and shredder 30%?

I use the regular shredder 9, but when I installed it on my PC it seemes to
have taken over the Fritz8 I installed before (when I select Fr8 now I get
the Shr9 intro page).
When I install Shr9 first and then Fr8 and play a game, it shows the same
results with Fr8 being so much better.
On the internet Shredder9 is also awfull with little time per move against
other computers, even when I uninstall Fr8.

The reason why the S9 start-screen appears, is because the GUI is in S9
mode, and that has nothing to do with your problem - whatever it is -
and there's no reason to uninstall F8. In the options menu it's possible
to choose different modes, which generally has no practically importance.
Except for updates. Have you tried to update on Playchess (in Shredder 9
mode) ? Log on - go to 'help - query update'.
